Guest guest
As we are now in day 12 of SCD, I have encountered more issues that I must question. Just need to know advice and if these symptoms are " normal. " First of all my son is hungry ALL of the time. I suspect this is from not getting his much desired starches. Second, he has a lot of gas. I suspect this is from veggies (?). Third he urinates A LOT. Is this from veggies such as squash or green beans, which he loves? He is not yet potty trained and he soaks his pull up at least twice per day maybe more. Fourth, today he had some very loose stools again. He isn't eating much: turkey, chicken, egg whites, pears, squash, carrots, green beans, gelatin, pear juice, little banana. What is recommended by others to eliminate? One more thing, is it too early then to start the yogurt? Thanks for all responses. Cindy mom of Kasam 4 1/2 ASD
Guest guest
Hi Cindy, <<First of all my son is hungry ALL of the time. I suspect this is from not getting his much desired starches.>> " Hungry all the time " is very common. Yes, I wonder, too... if it's more carb-craving than actual HUNGER hunger. <<Second, he has a lot of gas. I suspect this is from veggies (?).>> This is just a huge change for his system.... so this doesn't surprise me. It should be pretty temporary. <<Third he urinates A LOT. >> I know this is not uncommon either.... but I am drawing a mental blank as to what the cause is. Either just part of his body de-toxing, or??? I will defer to someone else's expertise on this one. << Fourth, today he had some very loose stools again. He isn't eating much: turkey, chicken, egg whites, pears, squash, carrots, green beans, gelatin, pear juice, little banana. >> Well.... loose stools may be a temporary bump in the road, but I would have to suggest trying to puree stuff for a bit, just like I told Kim, if you read that post. These foods seem fine.... as long as you're peeling and cooking everything (I assume you are). Why no egg yolks? <<One more thing, is it too early then to start the yogurt?>> Was he dairy free before? If you don't get the yogurt started soon, you really need to be giving him a legal acidophilus supplement. Very important to re-populate his gut with good guys as the bad guys take their leave. He's 9, eats everything in sight and is looking in the fridge as soon as he's finished a meal. I had to get a much bigger lunch box for school because I send in so much food every day. 2 bowls of meat and veggies with lots of mayo, a banana, applesauce for his noon pills, and at least two other items such as chicken pancakes with mayo, and maybe another fruit. Plus water. And then he has a snack when he comes home. I went to www.fitday.com and put in a days worth of food, and realized altho it looked like a lot, there probably weren't enough calories for him. So he gets lots of mayo. It may keep him from looking in the fridge for about 15 minutes. We are SERIOUSLY considering some sort of lock for the door. The increased urination could be a few things. This is also BJ. He has atleast 3 changes of clothes at school. We were changing his sheets almost every night - between 2 and 4. When I mentioned it to my Mom she said it was the protein. When I cut his protein at dinner, the nighttime urination decreased. We also discovered that if he has beef, we can count on a wet bed. One of the changes I have discovered in changing my diet to no grains is the fact that my bladder will hold more, and is much less spastic. Rather than having to pee a little bit many times thruout the day, I pee a lot just a few times. Makes car rides much easier. There also can be foods that cause him to pee more. Lettuce does it for me, and there are probably others. Peeing a lot is also a sign of diabetes. But that's something you'd have to check with his pedi with. Guest guest
Thanks for the response Patti Kasam is not doing egg yolks right now due to the phenols in them and his not sleeping. Last night he actually slept 9 hours. He is already on acidopholis and I am in the process of making my first batch of yogurt as I type. Somebody else posted about the urinating and suggested it might be from the protein. I figure it might be from the gelatin as well as he really enjoys that. Guest guest
Hi Sue Thanks for the response. He was tested about one month ago for diabetes (glucose in urine), test came back negative , so that is ruled out already. I wonder if it is from all the gelatin he loves to eat (?) Changing clothes and sheets is our new thing. Extra clothes at school as well. He only gets turkey and chicken, up to 3 - 4 times per day, maybe it is the protein. I was just looking at chicken and turkey as possible ways to fill him up to sleep, another thing we don't do well. Guest guest
Cindy, I meant to add one more comment to this. We only suggest delaying starting the SCD yogurt for kids that were CF before they started the diet. If he was, then we generally suggest waiting a few months and starting with a very small amount. If he was already having dairy products without problems, then I don't see why you couldn't start now. <<One more thing, is it too early then to start the yogurt?>> Was he dairy free before? Guest guest
Hi Cindy, > First of all my son is hungry ALL of the time. I > suspect this is from not getting his much desired starches. Huge increases in hunger are very common. Moms and Dads often find they do *a lot* of cooking and food preparation especially at the beginning of the diet. Once people start the diet they often have increased appetites for a few reasons: -they don't feel sick anymore and actually get their appetite back -their body is switching from rumen type digestion to actual human digestion -their body is healing (which will burn extra calories) - and the big one we have noticed on the children's list is that they start catching up in growth. Many have reported huge growth spurts. Their body is able to continue normal growth patterns now that it is absorbing nutrients whereas preSCD many have reported their kids were at the lower percentiles for weight and height. Put it all together and you end up with huge appetites. It usually settles down after a while (though kids still go through regular growth spurts). >Second, > he has a lot of gas. It should level off as he adjusts to the diet. Elaine discussed this topic at this link: http://lyris.dundee.net/read/messages?id=252979#252979 > Fourth, today he had some very > loose stools again. How were his stools yesterday? Did you add something new the last 2- 3 days. > One more > thing, is it too early then to start the yogurt? Have you been dairy free for a long time? If not, once you get the diarrhea under control you could slowly start to introduce it. (1/8- 1/4 tsp and slowly increase.
