Anyone running a live SCD support group?

Hi:

I've been thinking of starting a once-a-month support group for

people committed to SCD who live in Vancouver, BC. But I'm wondering

if anyone else has tried this anywhere else in the world, and had any

success? One problem I can foresee is people " trying " the diet, not

being 100% compliant, and saying " the diet doesn't work " and calling

me up at all hours because they're not getting better :-o

What I'm looking for is a group of people I can meet with in person

and we can develop a list of local resources, share recipes, have

potlucks, and sort of hold each other up. Sometimes I feel like I'm

the only one in this vast city who's doing SCD.

Another goal I have is to spread the word about SCD. I know so many

people with autistic children who would benefit from SCD (I don't

know if DAN doctors operate in Canada). And reading that brochure

from CHILD (http://www.child.ca) about children with IBD and needing

more money for research and setting up research facilities right here

in Vancouver, and diet not being mentioned as a route to healing just

burns me up. It almost feels like a crime that more people don't know

about this diet, or is there a conspiracy of silence?

But it _is_ a difficult diet to follow and not everyone has access to

online support. Am I setting myself up for failure? Is there anyone

else in Vancouver who would like to join me LOL!

I know there's the Upper Canada Lower Bowel Society in Ontario which

is an SCD support group, but I don't know if they still meet. I'd

like to hear from someone at UCLBS about how it's going...Carol?

If anyone else has some words of wisdom or advice, any links or

books that might be helpful, I'd appreciate it. I know I'm rambling,

but I'm convinced this diet is important, even for people like me

who " only " have IBS (Irritible Bowel Syndrome), but have found that

the SCD has drastically improved their moods and eliminated long-

standing depression (which is why I now have energy for something

like running a support group). Okay, I'm done :-)

Thanks. Theresa (in Vancouver, BC, Canada)

If I lived there I would be interested! I wish there was something like that

here honestly (Santa Barbara).

I was feeling the same need. A few nights ago, I posted on

Craigslist, looking for other SCD'ers in my area (Portland, OR) and

suggesting we start a monthly support group. Haven't gotten any

replies yet, but I am hoping...

Thank you Pamela, Molly and Kelli for your support. I think I'm going

to approach a local whole foods market chain (it's called " Choices " )

and see if they'll sponsor us. It would also help if they could carry

BTVC and some of the cookbooks, like " Grain Free Gourmet " which is

AWESOME, and some SCD legal foods. They would supply the space, and I

could write an article for their monthly newsletter, and they could

help spread the word. This will take time though, one step at a time.

I would probably break up the meetings into two parts, the first

part, information for newcomers, or people who have never heard of

the diet, and the second part, for people who are COMMITTED to the

diet, who need support and encouragement. Once a month.

If anyone knows anyone in the British Columbia lower mainland who

might be interested, feel free to pass along this message and have

them get in touch with me. Also, feel free to cross-post this message

to other lists, just CC me if you do this. Thanks.
