Guest guest
You asked if anyone is concerned about learning problems in kids with plagio and it sounds like you're connecting it to the plagio as opposed to the corrective helmet. My 7-month-old just started his helmet and my husband and I are worrying about the opposite--is there any chance that the helmet itself could cause any kind of damage or learning/attention problems?? I'd be interested in any anecdotal information about connection between plagio (treated as well as untreated) and learning problems. Guest guest
I have read about parents here wondering if their children's delays were related to plagio. However I haven't seen any evidence that they are. My daughter wore a band from age 5 mo to 10 mo for brachy (flat in back) and was on time or early for all her milestones. She is now 3 yrs old and very bright and physically coordinated too. I know other plagio/banded kids who are exceptionally bright and those are are pretty normal. I've been in this group for over 2 years and from what I've read here there is no reason not to band. -christine sydney, 3 yrs, starband grad > > > > Hi all, > > > > I have been in and out of this group over the years I have two > > daughters that went through the DOC band. Guest guest
My daughter has been in the band for 11weeks. She’s always been a little on the advanced side (walking at 9 months, 50 words by 14.5 months, combining words by 15 months, and currently toilet training). We just participated in a study for early identification of Autism (as a normally developing child) and part of the assessment was developmental. She’s coming out at the 18 to 22 month range in all of her skills. Clearly, the band has not hindered her thus far. All of the daughters have told us that her head shape would not cause developmental or learning problems, so I’m assuming that there’s a good body of literature out there saying this. , mom to , 17 months 1 week 11 weeks in STARband plus CST Re: Hi all, New yet old to the group and Plagio and learning problems?? Guest guest
I’m sorry that it’s taken me so long to respond. I just posted some pictures of under the N file ( W). The pictures were taken after only 8 weeks in the STARband. We are now at 12 weeks. She was scanned at 9 weeks and we’d had 8 mm of growth since the scan for the helmet. Her original scan showed 95 percent. The scan for the helmet showed 93.9 percent (we attribute the improvement to her CST treatments). At 9 weeks, she was down to 92.3 percent. In the pictures, the first picture is days before the helmet. I don’t have any pictures of those angles before we started the CST. We didn’t know what to expect from for a couple of reasons. First, her head is very small (below the 3rd percentile-43 cm at 15 months) so any improvement would have a greater effect on a percentage change. Second, we reasoned that she was due a growth spurt because she had difficulties with growth during the several months prior. Due to reflux and food allergy issues, she was DX with failure to thrive because she got down from the 25th to the 5th percentile within a few months. She was refusing all solids at one point and for a while, wouldn’t take the bottle from daycare. All she would do was nurse. We got her past that and she started eating really well a couple months prior to getting in the helmet. She was up to the 10th percentile when we got in the helmet. She is still eating really well most of the time. At a recent appointment for an ear infection, she was actually above the 10th, but not at the 25th yet. So, we are still hoping for more of a growth spurt. Have you thought about looking into CST? We believe that some of ’s improvements have been due to this. , mom to , 17.5 months 12 weeks in STARband plus CST. Re: Hi all, New yet old to the group and Plagio and learning problems?? Guest guest
I also saw the infomercial and was tempted to buy it. While I believe that many babies can probably learn to read, I’m not sure that I want to have this one advanced skill. I’d rather focus on helping her develop in all avenues. So, we do work with her on her development in general and trust that the experiences we are providing her will prepare her well for learning in general. I work in the educational field and so I know that things like background knowledge as well as normal preparing for kindergarten and experience with books make great strides towards getting our kids ready to do well in school. That’s just my opinion. Rather than spending the money on this program, I would spend it on things like mommy and me classes, puzzles, books, etc. We take and Aidan to mommy and me gymnastics, baby/toddler story time, and they had mommy and me swimming last summer.
