Guest guest
Ellen, I know how frustrating it can be to go against the doctor's recommendations. Our GI wanted my husband on iron pills too, which in the beginning he had to take them or the poor guy would pass out at work. He has Crohn's too and was very severe when first diagnosed. Unfortunately, it did affect his digestion and took him extra long to improve on the diet. We finally convinced the doctor to let us start supplementing the iron with his diet. Here are some of my tips. Cook everything you can in cast iron, especially acidic foods. The food will absorb iron from the pan. I do my applesauce, tomatoes, ketchup, etc. in cast iron. He makes his eggs in a small cast iron skillet everyday, too. Also, chop up organic beef liver in a food processer and add to ground beef in burgers, meatloaf, etc. Iron can be found in red meat, liver, spinach, broccoli, parsley, and egg yolks. Also if she can eat something high in vitamin C when eating foods with iron, it will help with iron absorption. If you absolutely must go on iron (which is not SCD legal) look for one without illegals. We had a hard time finding any, even at the health food store. Hope this give you some ideas, Sharon -wife of Adam - Crohn's - SCD less than 6 months. > > Well, I've finally decided to bit the financial bullet and make a big order from Kirkmans, since it doesn't seem like I am able to find a legal probiotic locally. DD's dr. wants her on an iron supplement, since she lost a fair bit of blood from internal bleeding, and is still anemic. The pecanbread supplement list doesn't seem to list one, just saying that iron can irritate sensitive guts. DD's dr. agrees, which is why we've waited until now to start her on iron. Guest guest
Thanks for the ideas about supplementing dd's diet with iron-rich foods, rather than iron supps. At the moment, I'm sure liver is not going to be " approved " by her, since she was a lifelong vegetarian until she started SCD 9 weeks ago, and has still only had red meat a handful of times (and not liked it much). I will definitely remember to try to cook more in our cast iron pan, though. I love simple solutions! Thanks, Ellen 8.5 year old dd dx'ed w. Crohn's. 9 weeks on SCD and doing great!!!!!
