Guest guest
Hi, I need advice figuring out how to move ahead. My son has been on SCD for 6 months, eating only a few cooked, seeded/peeled veggies and oils and meats (he's allergic - IgE - to most everything else). He's also been on constant ketoconazole. His latest digestive stool analysis came back with no yeast or inflammation, but with low levels of flora - high lactobacillus but low bifidus. We will be addressing this with high-potency probiotics. He also has undigested soft stools with lots of vegetable matter. We need an enzyme but haven't found one safe for his allergies yet. It will be awhile til his leaky gut heals completely, and then we need to avoid his many, many allergens long enough to outgrow the antibody reaction. I think he has two main digestive problems at this point -- 1) establishing a strong base of healthy flora so we can back off the antifungals, and 2) finding an enzyme that he tolerates and is effective. Taking these things into mind, I'd really like to expand his VERY restricted diet a little bit. I need some advice. There are a few foods we'd like to try: - low-allergen nut butters, home-made (macadamia, sunflower) - some new vegetables, some of which he has been allergic to in the very distant past (he tends to re-sensitize easily, even on SCD, so we'll only be giving these one meal a week to start). These include baby peas and green beans, and I'm wondering whether the skins will be a risk since he doesn't digest vegetables well due to the enzyme problem? Will the risk be worth the benefit of a higher-protein veggie? I don't think this is an issue the SCD will solve, and I hate to wait forever to expand his food list if it's not something that SCD will help with. It's not like I'm adding a disaccharide. - Omega oils that I can rotate. We'll need at least 3, and my options include salmon oil, lignan-free flax oil (I've been told this is SCD legal but have so far not found one), seaweed oil (I know seaweed is illegal but shouldn't the oil be okay?), and hemp oil (any issues with this?) I was advised that these are all SCD legal by a DAN nutritionist who claims to be compliant with SCD. Advice please? Guest guest
Bump ... any advice? I don't want this to roll off the board on the weekend before folks have a chance to reply... I can't answer most of your questions, but peas can be a problem for people who cannot digest lactose. The sugar in peas, raffinose, is very similar to lactose, so there can be a cross reaction. Guest guest
How interesting, thank you. He had a pea allergy at 9 months old, so he may not tolerate peas if he hasn't outgrown the allergy yet. We tried egg over the weekend (which by the way, he's never been exposed to in his life except in utero and through my breastmilk before 2 months old) and he had an allergic reaction. So not only are eggs still out of the question for him, we've confirmed that his allergies are still highly sensitive, SCD or no SCD.
