Guest guest
I have been using the progurt starter for my goat yogurt and it works great, but I heard you could use the actual yogurt as starter. Does anyone do this? If so what is the right amount per quart? I am trying to help cut my gigantic grocery bill! Mandy
Guest guest
No, you can't use your own home-made yogurt as a starter. You *can* use commercial yogurt as a starter, if it contains ONLY the legal strains... Dannon plain yogurt is the only one I know of. Patti Using yogurt for starter? Guest guest
I do. I bought the organic plain by ’s or Strauss. I use ½ c for a half gallon. I have tried using my own yogurt as a starter after I have made it. I think I like it better with the store bought yogurt, but I am still playing around. Good luck! Guest guest
If I'm not mistaken, 's yogurt contains bifidus, which is not SCD legal. I'm not familiar with the Strauss brand. Guest guest
>> I bought the organic plain by s or Strauss. << , Both 's and Strauss contain Bifidus, and are not legal starters for SCD yogurt. Using your own yogurt for a starter isn't a good idea because after sitting for however long in the refrigerator, your yogurt may not have enough bacteria to properly use up the lactose in the milk. -- Marilyn (New Orleans, Louisiana, USA) Undiagnosed IBS 25 Years, SCD Five Years Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
