Guest guest
Hi , I too am new to the group, I am a 52 year old female with a BMI of 51 and I have the same stories as all of us normally have. I was just ready to embark on the open gastric bypass , when I recieved a little email from Trish telling me to check out this website. I am very grateful since this proceedure seems so much safer and certainly a whole lot less down time with it. I'm kinda the same way, I want it yesterday but I know I have to take all the steps necessary to accomplish this and be patient. I just filled out the online form last night and today will start taking some of the other steps necessary to have the surgery. Try and be patient , all good things take time they say. Welcome to our group! I wanted to proceed very quickly, also. I found the list around the middle of May. I think I sent my online form in around June 1, and sent my packet in about 3 days later. I didn't have a PCP when I found the site, so I had to find one, and he couldn't have been more supportive. Dr. R.'s letter went to my insurance company around the middle of June. They requested more info, and also requested that I see Dr. R. before they would even consider approving the surgery. I flew out to clinic on July 11, and got my approval 2 days later. I had my surgery on July 31, because that is the date I picked. I think I could have gotten in sooner. So, it took me a little over 2 months from the time I found this site until surgery. It could have been quicker if I had gotten insurance approval faster. That was the biggest hold up. Good luck to you, I hope everything works out for you! Guest guest
Hi , I also wanted to move quickly, but the process does take some time. I think the point of all the 12 steps is to make sure that you really have time to absorb everything you can about the procedure and its risks - and the likelong changes you have to make after the surgery to protect your health. I also think it gives you the time you need to think about and question the decision you are making. I have heard from people that have had the surgery that it's not a good idea to go too fast - otherwise you might be thought to be making too hasty a decisions. As I've seen posted on this board many times - you are exchanging one major medical condition for another lifelong medical condition, so you better think carefully about what you are doing. But that being said, once you see the possibilities, it's hard not to want to do this ASAP. A great idea came across the board the other day - printing off a bunch of stuff from the Web site and sending it to your MD to read before you go in to see him or her. That way he or she has a better idea of what the procedure involves. I filled out my online form the day I saw my MD the first time. I got my insurance letter back from Dr. R and sent that in to the insurance company. (Call ahead if possible and fax it to the attention of a specific person.) I now have to wait until my MD returns from vacation to get my history and physical exam. In the mean time, I have spent my time making contacts with post ops, writing my letter and having my husband write his, and reading and rereading the patient education manual. I started the investigation in early August and hope to send my packet in by September 11. I have received my insurance approval, so I hope I can get approved by Dr. R and get surgery in early October. I think that's pretty quick based on reading the posts to this e-group. But I think many on this group are fighting for approval from their insurance companies and that's what has made the process so long for so many. I hope this helps - good luck as you begin your journey down this path. - waiting in Chicago Too good to be true? Hi, I am new to this group and would like some help. I am 37 yrs. old, with BMI 40. Like most of the other people that I have read about, either in their posts or journals on the MGB web-site, I have struggled with my weight all of my life. So when I discovered the web- site, It was like a light of hope. I see that a lot of you have been working on having the surgery for up to a year. I have been researching this for 2 weeks and want to fill out my paperwork NOW. I have been an ER nurse for 14 years, so I have a working understanding of the risks and possible compications. But I still want to have it done asap. Did any of you want to move this quickly or is it even possible? I have my husband's support but have yet to talk to my MD. I guess I just wanted to hear your thoughts. Guest guest
Hi Sharon and welcome to the group. *EVERYBODY* wants it yesterday, but you have to do it the exact way Dr. Rutledge says or he won't approve you, so take your time and do it right. It's well worth it. Also, if you haven't seen it already, you might want to see my website for more info at: http://www.fourlane.com/mgb Kind regards, sblack1@... wrote: > > Hi, > I am new to this group and would like some help. Guest guest
Dear Deb, I read your e-mail this morning and wondered what the rationale was for having you meet with Dr. R before they would approve you. (Who was your insurance?) I would walk through coals, never mind an extra trip to the south. I wondered if you could share what foods you are able to tolerate and if there were any negative experiences regarding the surgery or recovery process? Thanks Tarri Re: Too good to be true? > In a message dated 8/28/00 9:53:17 AM Central Daylight Time, > sblack1@... writes: > > << But I still > want to have > it done asap. Thanks Tarri >> Hi Tarri, I have BCBS of Minnesota (I live in Illinois, but my husband's employer is based in Minnesota). The nurse at the review board said that no insurance company will approve you for surgery if you haven't been seen by the surgeon. She said that the only reason other companies might not push it is that Dr. Rutledge's letter to them makes it sound like he has seen you. It cost me a total of about $250 for the extra trip, since my sister-in-law went with me and shared the hotel and rental car. It was definitely worth that, since I got approved two days after I went to clinic, as soon as they received the additional info they wanted from Dr. R. I am four weeks post op today, and I can honestly say that I can eat pretty much anything I want, just in small quantities. Although I wouldn't recommend strawberry cheesecake - that put me right over on the green team...lol. It is nice to have a body that is smart enough to reject bad foods. Until I train my mind to eat healthy, it tells me whether I should be eating something, and also how much and how fast. I feel as if nothing was done to me. Since I left the hospital, the only discomfort I have had was my staples would pinch if I moved the wrong way sometimes. Since they came out, I have felt good as new, but shrinking...lol. I also had a rash for the first couple of weeks. I must have had an allergic reaction to something I got in the hospital, or right after I got out. Small price to pay for a better life! Good luck on your journey! Deb
Guest guest
since you recently had your surgery, what were your out of pocket expenses for the surgery (ie..clinic fees, drs fees, hospital fees) and at what point did you have to pay this. Did you just pay your co-pay since your insurance did approve you? please let me know I'm scheduled for clinic tomorrow and I'm still wondering. I don't want to get turned down because I don't have my fees. Thanks in Kannapolis brewer67@... Guest guest
Hi , I, too, wanted this surgery immediately after reading the website and contacting one or two post-ops. Then, when I found this list, I was thoroughly convinced. I even went to Durham to pick up a manual, (I couldn't seem to download it from the computer) and I live in Miami. I don't see anything wrong with taking action while continuing your research. I am hoping for a date in September and I just found out about the MGB in July. I am almost finished my packet, plan to have it in by 9/1, which is the day my new insurance takes effect. Best Wishes, Ruqayya
