Sara,

I think it's safe to give it a cautious trial but very gradually. Make

sure it's peeled and seeded. Cut back or out if there are negative

reactions.

Sara,

I personally think you could sabotage his gut healing by introducing the raw

foods so soon. Berries, depending on what kind, can have lots of seeds that

really need to be strained out after cooking. With blueberries, the skins AND

seeds can be very difficult to deal with in the digestive tract... and remember,

whatever can't be digested properly will contribute to feeding the bad gut

pathogens.

I just would hate to see him not have a chance for his gut to fully heal....

this diet is a lot of work for you and you might end up having to go clear back

to square one and start over if you introduce things before his gut is really

ready.

Have you tried smoothies? Steam peach, pear or apple chunks, then freeze

them..... toss in a blender with ripe banana and whir. Almost heaven. I wonder

if he'd accept this? You can take that smoothie mixture and freeze it into

popsicles, too.

If you really cannot find any way to get him to accept it, a nice ripe peach...

peeled of course, would certainly be a better choice than raw apple or berries.

Peeled ripe pear might be next best.

If it's the crunch of a raw apple he craves, he might even like to try frozen

apple slices that have been steamed.

I can only tell you our personal experience. My son has been scd for 3

months, and we were able to start some of the softer fruits such as raw

strawberries, ripe peaches, ect. after about 7 weeks. We haven't been able

to venture beyond that very much since though. Hopefully, someone with a

bit more experience can give an opinion.

I honestly think you want to be very cautious about blueberries, unless you cook

them and strain out the skins and seeds.

I think one month is too soon for raw anything.... except ripe banana.

It does seem that I'm anxious also to start new things. We feel

better for a while and think about how to expand our repertoire of

foods. There's no exact time table and of course the body will let

you now immediately if you made a mistake. I'm thinking of starting a

few raw things, but not sure where to begin with fruits and salads.

I've been doing this since Father's Day. I've read so many are doing

the diet past the year. Have there been many who are completely over

this and back to all carbs? I'd love to hear their stories too.

Ronnie,

Elaine comments on returning to the SAD on page 70 of BTVC, edition 10,

My friend who co-authored an SCD cookbook and has UC has healed but only goes

off the

diet two weeks of the year and then goes back to it.

I was just wondering what is the problem with adding raw fruit? I am new

and still learning. Only been doing SCD for 2 weeks. Thanks Robin

Cooking fruit breaks down the fiber and cooked fruit is easier to digest until

the gut

begins to heal.

Robin,

This may be a bit late but raw fruit can be very irritating to a sensitive gut.

The fiber that is thrown down that irritated gut is equal to rubbing sand paper

on an open wound...ouch!!
