Guest guest
Zach needs constant entertainment too. I have never seen him sit and play with a toy by himself. He is in an early intervention program and even the therapists couldn't get him to focus for long. He is so funny because we have so many store bought toys that he never touches but he loves to walk around with a broom or empty my tupperware drawer. It can be exhausting enteraining him all of the time, but maybe a routine of the same distraction only at meal times. A certain video only to be played at meal times, or a toy. Zach really likes to look at his books during meals now, so we let him use bath books (easy to clean). Zach also loves to help me spoon feed him. I give him his own spoon to make a mess with while I shovel the food in. He likes to do whatever I do. My neighbor who is a nurse pointed out how stressful mealtimes can be since we are so worried about his weight. We try to go with his flow, but when he takes one bite of cheese and stops I try not to get upset. His weight sounds awesome. Zach only weighs 8 oz more and he is 19 months old. Sara > Why does my son have to be continually occupied while eating, it is such a battle, he needs to be doing something, plying with a toy shaking his pill bottle, paying with food. Nearly every mouth full I have to find something else for him to look at to distract him so he will eat. He has been like this for months now, he is totally gone off breastfeeding now as well so I am expressing and putting it in a bottle, he needs to be watching a video or carried around to drink his bottle as well. This is so frustrating. He is such a cleaver child as well and he is figuring out that when I distract him I shovel in food so even now that is starting to lose its charm. Even when hes not eating he needs to be continually entertained with stimulating stuff, music, video, mummy, noisy toys etc..... I ended up saying I have had enough this morning and I gave him no breakfast and he went to bed without, Mean mother I am. But I battle with this 3 times a day and I've had enough. > On a better note Liam is now up to 22 pounds (10.36 kg) he is 12 months old. He put on 1 kg (2.2 pounds in 3 weeks) WOWOWOWO I have been giving him maltodextrin, a high carbohydrate powder. Certainly did the trick. > > mum to Liam 1 wcf > > > >

Guest guest
, My son is getting a referal as week speak(well type) for early intervention as well. He has horrible food avertions. These kids hate eatting. If you think about it this area is the only one that they know they can control. My son is 8 months old and is an expert at not eatting. I would agree with all other moms that you need to get him involved in some sort of speech and physical therapy. It is not your fault it just happens with these kids and many others. Sara, my son is horrible to try to keep happy. Do your therapists feel that this is a physical developing problem. Just currious. They say that I can only get the referal if he has two troubles. He has oral motor troubles but they will not with out a fight anyways see him with out two. Good luck to all of the moms out there fighting with their kids to eat. Guest guest
n, I am going to get killed for posting so many separate messages I know it. Anyways, I think that I am going to see if my doc will work with me on this issue considering the fact that he has so many eatting troubles. Guest guest
They told me my son DID NOT need speech at 2.5. At 4 they told me he had significant speech and language issues so they sent him out of district to another school. He is still getting speech 4 times a week and OT. He has many sensory issues as well as low tone, hence eating is a nightmare. The evals go by a percentage. Its speech + motor skills...to see if they qualify for EI (under 3 services). Rosemary in NY with 3 children (13, 10.6 and 6.6) with CF. I have a dog named TOBI and have coined the phrase " BREATHE DAMMIT "
Guest guest
Zach had a 30% gross motor skill delay and a 33% speech delay at 13 months old. They told me that if had evaluated at under 30% in either catagory, we would not have qualified for services. Since he was borderline the pediatrican had to request services. Luckily Zach has a great developmental therapist and physical therapist. We stopped services because he met his goals, but he will be on monitoring every three months. His same therapists will do evaluations and if he falls behind again they will reopen his case. We are very lucky. I have heard that other early intervention programs are not as thorough. I was resistant to having him in early intervention at first but now I am so glad I did. I learned so much from watching the therapists interact with him. They are great with kids and Zach is my only so sometimes I really don't know what to do with him. I am sorry they botched your son's evaluation. I would be angry too if they had done that to Zach. It takes a while to catch up on the skills that are missed and it can get so aggravating. Sara > They told me my son DID NOT need speech at 2.5.
