Guest guest
Searmi, Can you tell us exactly what he is eating right now? Also... are you 100% sure all his supps are free of trace illegals (I'm sure you already thought of that). I'm glad you're not doing tons of other things right now, at the same time as the diet. It would be tough to know what was what. Let's see if we can tease anything out. Is he eating any raw foods, for example? Patti hyper, laughing, squealling, not sleeping... hi everyone, our autistic son has been scd since january; we introduced goat yogurt about three months into the diet, took out nuts completely over a month ago. his bm's are solid unless he eats too much fruit; however, his overall progress is very up and down. recently we tried giving him some homemade raw cow's milk yogurt and some legal cow cheeses, but even before this he was regressing in several areas, such as not responding to his name or questions asked of him, not using utensils anymore, not wanting to explore playground equipment, not being excited when mom and dad come home...he just wants to look at books and watch movies (all day, if we would allow this!). he is still non-verbal for the most part, usually making high-pitched squalling sounds. he is stimming more than he ever has, lining things up obsessively, circle spinning, side-glancing, squinting, hugging things, mouthing objects...we were wondering what other families have experienced with this diet and recovery of autism. our boy was diagnosed at 2.3 and was gfcg for one year with tons of biomed stuff (supplements, chelation, etc) before starting this diet six months ago. he's done tomatis listening therapy, claybaths, magnetic matress pad, you name it, we've tried a lot of stuff on our little guy in the last year and a half. how long before we start to see some STEADY progress??? that's what this mom needs in order to forge on...or some encouraging words! at the moment, our boy is not chelating, but doing minimal supplements (b12 shots, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, dmg), and sees a classic homeopath (who suggested that in order to allow the body to learn to heal itself, you need not bombard it with too many supplements). it's just so hard to know that you're doing all you can, or are you doing too much??? aah! thank you so much for this group's support, searmi mom of benjamin, asd, 3.8 year-old (scd for 6 months), and matilda, 20 months old, nt and talking up a storm! Guest guest
Hi Searmi; Is your son on any antifungals for yeast flare-ups? The hyperness, squealling and not sleeping sound like yeast issues to me. When my daughter is having trouble with the yeast beast she has these same symptoms. Drunken party in her crib in the wee hours of the morning. Definitely not an expert - I think SCD can help dramatically with yeast/bacteria issues but I don't think the diet is a cure-all for these issues which can be chronic for a lot of ASD kids. And congratulations for being so persistant with the biomed interventions. I know how much work they all are, and how frustrating it can be when you don't see much progress. Everyone needs some incentive to continue! I speak from experience - my daughter is also severely autistic. We've also tried every treatment in the book and haven't been able to crack our " tough nut " . Hang in there, hopefully it will get better for both of us :-) HTH, Kim 2 months dairy-free SCD for 3.5 yo ASD, and 2 yo with G.I/behavioural issues
Guest guest
thanks for writing, patti! benjamin is eating eggs, meats (beef, chicken, pork, turkey, lamb), cooked veggies (broccoli, cauliflour, spinach, winter and summer squashes), raw carrots. we used to cook all his fruit but now he eats mostly raw but peeled apples, pears, banana, oranges, peaches, and berries are his favorite. no more nuts, but goat yogurt that we ferment for at least 36 hours with a little bit of honey. i tried some cow cheese and raw cow milk yogurt in the last few days and he seems more hyper with some maniacal laughing, so we stopped that. i am sure that all his supps are 100% scd legal, which is why he is doing less supps. hard to find good ones that are scd legal. i am a true believer that food is usually the culprit...maybe too many raw fruits? he does have yeast and bateria issues, which is why we stopped chelation (with td-dmps). we were doing magnetic claybaths instead but stopped that because of the homeopathy. thank you again for your advice! i am grateful for your time. ~searmi > > Searmi, > > Can you tell us exactly what he is eating right now? > > Also... are you 100% sure all his supps are free of trace illegals (I'm sure you already thought of that). Guest guest
hi kim! thank you for your response... hmm, sounds like our boy still has yeast issues; he is usually very giddy and happy when he's up at 3am! the only antifungal he is on is scdophilus; we make his goat yogurt and give him as much garlic as he'll take in his hamburger. have you had luck with grapefruit seed extract, olive leaf extract, or other antifungals? ben was on nystatin when we were just gfcf but reacted really badly to it. he must have been having major die-off, hitting his head on the walls and things like that, but after two months of that i couldn't take it anymore and took him off of it. he was much better after that. i know, it is so hard to figure out what's going on with these kids of ours; but we are lucky that they are still very young and i am positive that they can recover! thank you so much for your warmth and encouragement, searmi mom to bennie, 3.8 asd and tilly, 20 months nt > > Hi Searmi; > > Is your son on any antifungals for yeast flare-ups? Guest guest
Searmi, I think you're probably right about the raw fruits. I would pull the raw carrots right now, too. I'm wondering why you are fermenting the yogurt for 36 hours?? I am very concerned that you might be overdoing it and losing quite a lot of the beneficial bacteria. I'll have to read through this again tomorrow and try to respond further if I can see anything else. Must go to bed! zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Patti Re: hyper, laughing, squealling, not sleeping... thanks for writing, patti! benjamin is eating eggs, meats (beef, chicken, pork, turkey, lamb), cooked veggies (broccoli, cauliflour, spinach, winter and summer squashes), raw carrots. we used to cook all his fruit but now he eats mostly raw but peeled apples, pears, banana, oranges, peaches, and berries are his favorite. no more nuts, but goat yogurt that we ferment for at least 36 hours with a little bit of honey. i tried some cow cheese and raw cow milk yogurt in the last few days and he seems more hyper with some maniacal laughing, so we stopped that. i am sure that all his supps are 100% scd legal, which is why he is doing less supps. hard to find good ones that are scd legal. i am a true believer that food is usually the culprit...maybe too many raw fruits? he does have yeast and bateria issues, which is why we stopped chelation (with td-dmps). we were doing magnetic claybaths instead but stopped that because of the homeopathy. thank you again for your advice! i am grateful for your time. ~searmi

Fermentation of goat yogurt for 36 hours renders the good bacteria useless. The incubation time is 24-28 hours ideally, If you go past 30 hours you can still cook with the yogurt or make ice cream etc. but the probiotic effect will be gone. Honey is added after the yogurt is set and chilled. Carol F. Celiac, MCS, Latex Allergy, EMS SCD 6 years
Guest guest
Looking over this again, Searmi..... Since he has been on SCD six months, you would think he'd be ready for some more advanced foods, but we can't assume that about any one individual child. I would go back to ALL peeled and COOKED veggies and fruits... and take out the berries unless you cook them and strain out seeds and skins (such as on blueberries). I would also take out the cabbage family veggies (broccoli, cauliflower) for a week or so and just re-introduce them carefully. See if there is any difference without them. Can you use green beans? No more raw carrots for a while! You might try steaming baby carrots until soft... then chilling them and letting him dip them in something (SCD ranch dressing made from yogurt? SCD mayo or ketchup? Honey mustard?). I also want to ask you about the " raw cow milk yogurt " . This means you are starting with raw milk.... but then you do heat it to 180 degrees F in the yogurt making process, right? I do think you are not getting the probiotics if you're fermenting yogurt for 36 hrs. Why did you stop all nuts? Were you using nut butters? Or flours... whole nuts? Guest guest
hi patti, we will try the goat yogurt again soon with only 24 hours of fermenting, but will plan to keep other dairy out until his behaviors are under control. we will go back to cooking all fruits and veggies, and start rotating some natural antifungals and maybe add some prescription anifungals if needed. it sounds like his behaviors are yeast-related. thank you again; i am grateful for your advice! ~searmi mom of benjamin, 3.8 asd, scd for 6 months
