Guest guest
Hi Chris- My son is still in his helmet, so I can't give you final measurements (plus measurements don't always tell the full story anyway). It is nowhere near perfect, but there has been some improvement, so again, I definitely think it's worth trying. The sutures do START to fuse after the age of one, but they are not FULLY fused until their late teens or early 20s. So don't let anyone tell you that they're already fused and there's no use trying. Because that's just not true. They are definitely not as easily moldable after one, but there is possibility for change, just at a slower pace. Also, how important is it to even follow up with the specialist? There are a lot of parents here I think that either never saw a specialist in the first place (their ped referred them and wrote the script) or never bothered following up. So if you stay in Singapore for the banding, I would think it's possible that it wouldn't be necessary to see that specialist again. Especially if he's not going to be supportive or of any help, you'd really just be wasting your time. The protocol at CT would be going for the scanning, going back two weeks later for the initial fitting, then going back one week later for your first adjustment, then probably every 3 weeks after that (at least that's how often my son goes, and I know that has to do partly with his age and partly with the fact that we do travel 3 hours to CT). So if you can only go to CA for a one-month chunk of time, I'm not sure how that would work. I know people have used locally made bands before. I would think the biggest concern would be if they are FDA approved. I don't know how that works in other countries though. The band in Singapore doesn't have a brand name? How many children do they see for banding a month? They said it looks like Orthomerica's StarBand, but is it adjusted the same way (periodic scraping of the foam liner to allow for growth)?
