Hi. I just recently joined and figured I should introduce myself. I'm

a 30 year old mom of two, that until just recently felt as if I were

more like 90. I have Hashimoto's/Autoimmune Thyroid Disease and

possibly Rheumatoid Arthritis (my sister, mom, grandma, etc etc) have

similar health issues and diagnosis of everything from Fibromyalgia to

Depressive Disorder. I was just officially diagnosed with Hashimoto's

this past March after a year and a half decent into horrid health. I

am not being treated with thyroid hormone replacement because my

endocrinologist doesn't think my lab numbers justify it yet (she

doesn't treat until TSH goes above 3) even though my thyroid

antibodies are in the thousands.

After my diagnosis I read everything I could about autoimmunity and

came across the gluten connection. A few weeks later I came across SCD

and was intrigued. The science behind how gluten affects autoimmunity

seemed to fit well with the concept behind SCD. I decided to do it. I

have had some ups and downs, die off maybe, but overall I feel like

this is the right way to go. I've been SCD now for a month or so. I

keep going back and forth between the intro diet and trying new foods.

There is so little that doesn't seem to cause a flare up of my fatigue

and/or joint pains. Oh yeah, I should also mention that I don't really

have any GI symptoms, except now that I'm doing SCD I have a lot of

gas. I'm hoping that is just die off and it will pass.

I also aim to prevent autoimmune disease in my children through diet.

These health issues are like a plague in my family, and anything that

I can do to avoid that fate for them, I will. My son, who is 4, has

always had really loose stools. I never really thought about it

before, just attributing it to the fact that he still breastfeeds. But

then I thought about the fact that my daughter had formed stools at

about 12 months old when she started solids, even though she continued

to breastfeed until 5 years old. So now I'm worried and not sure what

is at work with my son's loose stools. The SCD hasn't really changed

this at all. I'm thinking maybe he is still eating too much fruit? How

can I not give him any fruit at all though? He craves " sweetness " .

(I'm one of the respondents to the crazy for bannanas thread, btw).

Well, I think that sums up everything about me and my family. Oh,

except that dear hubby is not doing SCD, although when at home he only

eats SCD stuff because I'm the cook. :-) But he is so sugar addicted

and will go out and get sugar when he feels the urge. :-(

I started a photo gallery and journal to track my progress on this

diet and to promote gluten awareness amongst the autoimmune

communities. If you would like to read more about my journey visit

I'm excited to have found this group and I look forward to learning

much from you all as I progress on this crazy journey towards better

health.

Hello

Your last name sounds Dutch. Am I right?

Welcome to our list. We hope you will find some answers here. While you may

think that you do not have digestive issues, all that you wrote about your

condition indicates that there is definately something wrong in the process of

breaking down food. The gut is the center of the body, where everything is

broken down for our use. If it does not work correctly, the body begins to break

down.

Have you a copy of Elaine Gottschall's book Breaking the Vicious Cycle? It is a

must have to do SCD. You will find the premise behind SCD in there. You will

also discover that gluten is really not the issue but starch and chains of sugar

are. SCD is gluten-free by default be we do not fear it. We fear the large

chains of sugar found in grains and table sugars. These cannot be broken down

and become food for the bad bacteria in the gut.

As for your son, he may be getting too much fruit. I always think that a craving

for sugar is usually a deficiency in protein. Monosaccharides found in fruit and

veggies drop sugar into the blood quickly while protein drops slowly. That way

the levels stay nice and even through the day. A good balance of protein, carbs

(good ones of course) and fat at every meal will hopefully curb his cravings and

solidify his stools.

Welcome and family

I also have thyroid issues and autoimmune challenges in the form of

Chemical Sensitivities and Latex Allergy. I had been on Eltroxin for

thyroid for many years. I was able to stop the Eltroxin under medical

supervision at Elaine's suggestion and have dealt with the MCS through

avoidance and SCD (I am also celiac.)

All things considered, although i am nit cured, I can manange these

conditions pretty well and have returned from near isolation six years

ago to a pretty normal lifestyle.

I love SCD and am committed to it indefinitely.

I hope I can be of some help.

Charlene, hi. Thanks for your response. Yes, I do realize that I have

digestive problems, whoops, I didn't make that very clear did I? :-) I

just meant I didn't have any outward GI symptoms like loose stools,

gas, or anything like that. My GI problems have been very silent for

the most part, except for a brief period of time in my mid twenties

when I thought I might have IBS. But all those issues went away when I

got pregnant the first time and never came back.

Yes I do have the BTVC book. I've read it twice now. And yes,I am

slowly realizing that gluten isn't the sole issue, but my

understanding on that is still evolving. I think I'm going to have to

update the info on my personal journey site to reflect my new

understanding of how the root cause is an inability to digest

starches/complex sugars. My current understanding is that one theory

is that the inability to digest gluten sets of this chain of events in

some people. Is that correct?

Thanks for the advice about my son. I do try to balance his meals, and

he eats a lot of protein, but he just craves sweetness all the time.

I'll try and see if I can get him to eat more protein. He used to eat

a lot of yogurt, but I've had flares from even properly made SCD

yogurt, so we are waiting to try that again in a week or so.

Oh and yes, the name is Dutch. :-) Hubby is of Dutch, English, and

Native American decent. I'm Irish, German, and Native Amercian.

Thanks again for all your suggestions and info.

Hi Carol. Thanks for sharing. Your personal health achievements on SCD

are very encouraging indeed!
