Guest guest
Amy, MANY kids who start this diet will not eat cooked veggies at first. For that reason, some inventive moms came up with " sneaky " ways to include pureed vegetables in other recipes that their kids would accept. Please look at some of those ideas on www.pecanbread.com ... click on " Overcoming Difficulties " and read the section on " Picky Eaters " . Then go click on " Recipes " and scroll down until you find the recipe for " Chicken Cupcakes " in the meats section..... and all the way down to the " Pancakes " section for " Sneaky Veggie Pancakes " . These are brilliant ways to circumvent the sensory aversion to vegetable eating. I would try some of these ideas first before peas. They are really too advanced... too starchy, and they have the outer skins. It is not uncommon for a child to lose a little weight in the beginning. At only three days on the diet, I think it's unlikely to be much actual body fat loss... possibly slight dehydration is a factor, plus just less intake of food. Not to worry, you will find many new ways for him to eat very soon... and he will regain what was lost. Try not to panic. Patti what to do next..... As I said in post a few minutes ago. My son has lost a pound. At bedtime just now, he was so hungry. " Mommy can I have an apple? cantelope?, pancake? " I just looked at him after struggling to get enough Intro foods in him today. Then he said " Ok, then can I have a boiled egg? " Of course, I jumped up and gave him an egg, and more banana ice cream. He just can't eat cooked veggies -- it is a texture thing. We have always had the one bite rule in our house, so he will eat one bite of cooked vegetable, but he really nearly gags. I think he would eat peas (phase 4?). I'll get some nut butters tomorrow. I am just intoducing yogurt, so I can't really fill him up with that. His bowels are finally moving. It looks ok, but rather small and compact. Guest guest
Amy We are 3 weeks in now and I have found a few things to get my son to eat veges. I have NEVER been able to hide stuff, because he always knows, gets suspicious and then doesn't eat at all, so I have been " almost " honest with him the whole way. The first thing I got him to eat - after about a week, was carrot. I cooked it in slices, and then cooled it in the freezer - he has only ever eaten raw or frozen before, so I figured this was the closest thing. He will now eat them warm which is great. The other thing I did which was oddly successful was mash up cooked pumkin and use cookie cutters to make shapes. I was stunned he ate these, as like your son he would gag on cooked veges pre SCD. One big difference I have seen is that if he is hungry he will eat - which so many parents of ASD children know that isn't usually the case. It makes it much easier to feed him as you can guess how much he will eat - it used to be sooo random, and we wasted so much food. Good luck - I know it is such a horrible feeling thinking you are starving you child. Vonny > > > what to do next..... > > > As I said in post a few minutes ago. My son has lost a pound. Guest guest
Moderators should know, but wouldn't the souffle bread recipe from Grain-Free Gourmet be OK for intro diet? I use pureed cooked carrots instead of yogurt and the only other ingredients are eggs (separated) and salt. (I add a touch of honey, but it doesn't call for it.) My little boy loves the bread plain or you can make french toast, " sandwiches " , etc. Last time I added 1/4 avocado w/ the carrots(he's in 5th percentile weight, but has gained a few pounds since being SCD) and it was undetectable. It has really added to the variety we eat. Midas gold pancakes also great with nut butter instead of nut flour- I use much less nut butter than flour called for (abt 1/3 to 1/4 as much) when you get to nut butter stage. Guest guest
Grain-Free Gourmet is great! I highly recommend. Since it's copyrighted I can't post the full recipe on the list I think- but a virtually identical recipe (just smaller amounts it looks like) of the author's can be found here: http://uclbs.org/recipes/bmc/soufflebread.php Just sub out the dry curd cheese (or dripped yogurt in book) with pureed carrots. I also cut this into mini goldfish shapes and dehydrate in oven an hour or two and have little crackers that way.
