Guest guest
Thanks Janet, I DO feel great. And I put on my jean shorts that were really tight last week, and they feel a little baggy today. What a great feeling! I have been thinking about Amy's birthday next week.. we have a tradition where I take each of my kids to TGI Friday's alone on their birthday for some one on one time.. with four kids, we don't get much of that... and I have my Cajun Chicken salad, and the kids have what they want, and then they get a free sundae... I am wondering how I will handle that...lol I guess I can probably get some soup, but will I be brave enough to try a bite of the sundae? Can you get dumping from ONE BITE of ice cream? Yikes... I'm not sure I have the self control for that, although at home, I am finding that I don't care whether I eat or not. What a GREAT feeling to be free of my addiction to food! I think restaurants will be harder, but maybe not... I'll let you know how it goes! Tell your little girl happy fifth birthday from me! Guest guest
Debbie, I am sure you will select some yummy fat free liquid food. You must, you don't want your first 'dumping' while alone with a 5 year old on her birthday.I think one on one with you is a great birthday especially with4,I was the 3rd of 4.Just think you can soon start a new tradition like skating or a water park or an amusement park!I know it is starting to sink in,now that your clothes are getting loose. You are there now it's just a matter of time. Guest guest
karen wrote: my doctor thinks i MAY have chronic pancreatitis but cannot give me a definite diagnosis. I've lost 25 pounds just this year. I cannot seem tot olerate any fat whatsoever. My dietician suggested some things but i also can't tolerate very big portions (2 pieces of toast fill me up) and get headaches from the very sugary Boost drinks she suggested. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to put some weight on? Dear , In welcoming you to the group, I also wanted to say that I understand what you are going through and although I can't find any answers for your weight loss, I do suggest that you talk with your doctor about pancreatic enzyme supplements. I, too, suffer from severe malabsorption and it has been an ongoing battle ever since my diagnosis of acute, then chronic pancreatitis two and a half years ago. The only time I was able to regain the 30 pounds I'd lost was two years ago when I was in the beginning stages of the chronic condition and taking enzymes. I also weigh 108 pounds, and I'm 5'-8 " . That's a size 0, or when I'm feeling full, maybe a 2. I have a closet full of 4's and 6's, and would rotate between the sizes as the weight came and went, but I haven't been able to get above 115 in well over a year and all those clothes are collecting dust. My malabsorption problems have been reviewed by both my GI and a hospital nutritionist. Before I became diabetic earlier this year, they had me taking Boost, Ensure and another supplemental protein drink in addition to adding protein whey powder to all my food. Purchasing all the supplemental products was excessively expensive, adding another $50 weekly to the food bill. It didn't make any difference for me, but it is something you might consider. If the Boost gives you headaches, you might try the low fat Ensure products or Slim Fast. A container of Slim Fast in addition to your regular meals may help add some pounds. Another suggestion is a product called Peptamen that is a supplement that is normally given in the IV or through tube feedings in the hospital when a patient goes on liquids only. It is available to purchase, in quantities of a case, or some pharmacies sell it by the can, at $10.00 per can. This product contains medium chain triglycerides which are essential for patients with malabsorption. The liquid is already pre-digested, so it is supposed to be very easy for a patient with digestive problems to tolerate it. Unfortunately, I order a case of Peptamen two years ago, and then after trying to drink three cans, found that I couldn't tolerate it. But you might have better luck with it. You could ask your doctor if he could locate some samples perhaps, it is usually available at any hospital. Or you could write to the manufacturer, and see if they would send you a few samples. Those are the only suggestions that I know of presently. My doctor has wanted to put me on a feeding tube for some time now, but is concerned that the threat of any infection at the site would be too much of a risk because of my diabetes and pseudocysts. I truly hope that you can find some solution that will help you. With hope and prayers, Heidi Heidi H. Griffeth South Carolina SC & SE Regional Rep. PAI, Intl. Guest guest
Re: Weight Loss On the subject of needing to add calories for the weight loss, I just remembered something. When I was pregnant with my 1st son, (whom is turning 6 in a week, time flies) I lost over 30 lbs during the pregnancy. The hospital nutritienist told me to drink Carnation Instant breakfast with every meal. She said to consider it a glass of chocolate milk. Maybe those of us that not diabetic (I am, so I can't) may want to try it. It taste pretty good and is easy to tolerate. Guest guest
Hello again , As Chrissy says, the weight loss is significant. Is it explicable by changes in diet while you have been feeling unwell? It doesn't take long for those changes to have an effect on weight. If you've had any diarrhoea (sorry...not nice topic!), which can be a sign of malabsorption when you have pancreatitis, that could also cause weight loss. I'd mention it to the doc when you see him/her, if it's too far off. I forgot to mention that in Nov. 2002 I went on a slimming diet and my pains, which were quite bad and frequent at the time, suddenly stopped. My panc definitely appreciated the small amounts of food, no alcohol, low fat etc. I didn't know I had CP of course, but you're right in thinking that slimming diets can help coincidentally with CP pain, for obvious reasons. Of course, going on slimming diets is probably not a good idea for most CP patients! Good luck again! Fliss (Lovely name.....pity about everything else!!!) Guest guest
My son has gained several pounds since starting scd 3 months ago, and he is tall and thin, so it didn't hurt him. My guess is that his weight gain was due to the fact that as his gut began to heal, his body was able to begin absorbing more nutrients. I wouldn't be concerned about you weight loss. While he didn't follow scd, my husband did give up a lot of starches a couple of years ago. He lost 20 lbs. in about 3 weeks. As long as you are eating when your body is telling you to, I think you're fine. Meleah Weight loss > Thankfully my son has gained a pound since starting SCD. Guest guest
I have lost over 10 pounds (maybe closer to 15) since starting SCD July 1. And I had lost more before that as we cleaned up our diet and played with SCD while researching and getting ready. I know I am 20 pounds lighter than I was in the spring--without intentionally trying to lose weight. The losing does really seem to have slowed lately. And the weight I lost was extra weight that isn't missed. Angie, Gus's mom > > Thankfully my son has gained a pound since starting SCD.
