Kathy,

Please don't be mad at . I don't think she meant to offend you.

She was just trying to point out that you can eat almost anything after

surgery, and the only way you will know which foods you personally can't

tolerate is by trying them. And even though it is very hard for me to

believe, there are so many people on here who have had chronic pain before

their MGB, and no pain after, that I would have to say that this could happen

to you, too. I know many thin people who have arthritis, but maybe you will

be one of the lucky ones who's symptoms disappear. There are several

prescription meds you can take for pain, but nothing over the counter. You

can ask Dr.R. which those are. I know this is very stressful, and sometimes

our feelings get hurt, but I don't think anyone on this list would ever

intentionally try to hurt someone. We are all in the same boat. Good luck

on your journey!

Hi Kathy,

I did not read 's comment AT ALL like you did. I think she just meant

that Liz's list of " dont eats " will probably be quite different than yours,

or anyone else's for that matter. We are all different--some can't tolerate

rice, but potatoes are fine, post-op, others visa, versa. It is all very

individual.

As for the pain meds, she spoke the truth!!! The MGB is not for everyone,

Dr. R clearly states this, and you are right in checking out everything

beforehand. I wish you the best.

Forgot to say that I thought it so sweet of that she included all those

extra symbols to help you and others know the " lingo. " I really don't see

how you could find fault with that. Maybe you were having a bad day and now

you are back to normal? I'm sure the " real you " is a loverly gal!

I also was a little taken a back by YOUR sarcasm. I attended clinic on 8/15 &

responded as Dr. R did. He said if the pain is so severe you need to call

your PCP & have him give you a prescription. It is that simple, No Tylenol, No

Aspirin & if your arthritis or headache or whatever pain is so unbearable then

you need to get a prescription.

Everyone one on this board is somewhat stressed, let's have a little compassion

here.

This is Liz in Ct. and oops I must have forgot to send my list of things I

can and cannot eat. I have kept a list of things that I cannot eat since

right after I had surgery in Dec 99. Although I agree with maybe we all can

tolerate different things I disagree with it is really not that big of deal.

It is a big deal if you are getting sick all the time after eating the same

things over again that made you sick the first time. I have found since I

have been on this list that alot of us get sick off some of the same types of

food that we are trying. It's funny that we should be having this discussion

because a couple of friends of mine had the MGB a little while ago and one of

them ate spaghetti and didn't get sick and the other one thought she would

give it a try. I told her don't eat the spaghetti cause if you are like me

you will dump off of it. Well, she figured a couple of bites wouldn't hurt

and guess what she dumped big time. The moral of the story here is that

better forewarned than not. Yes, it is up to the individual what he or she

decides to eat but a little knowledge from a post op might help someone along

the way. Liz

I totally agree with Stormy and Rene'. is a big asset to this group.

She is blunt and to the point and VERY funny. When I read her response to

you I was laughing. I don't feel she had any sarcasm intent. I totally

understood the ice cream deal!! She deals with these issues by using humor.

is not some skinny person who stopped by to laugh and make jokes at

fat people. She has been where we are at and is trying to help us get to

where she is currently at!! (You go size 16!!) Lighten up, take a deep

breath, we are all in this together!! We totally understand what you are

feeling.

I just read your message and see no sarcasm in

it....sometimes when people cant make major decisions

or have lots of stress in their lives they

misinterpret communications....

I understand everything you said...I am the same

way..some foods bother others dont...so its a personal

thing...each has to try it for themselves...as for the

pain meds...I felt the same way she did but Dr R set

me straight...lol thats why he is the king..lol

keep up the great support for us here...thanks for all

Did you actually dump (sweating, hot/cold flashes, chills, nausea,

overwhelming weakness) or throw up? Dumping is not the same as throwing

up (not that you don't know that, but in case there's any confusion on

the issue).

When I eat too fast or don't chew thoroughly, I throw up (yes, still.

I'm a slow learner, really slow. Today, in fact, I threw up a fruit cup

I had sucked down like a Hoover). Throwing up is not so bad and nothing

like it was pre-op.

Ice Cream makes me dump and it is AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL.

Kind regards,

Debbie,

I'm no expert but I can tell you, you can dump off of anything!!! I have

only dumped twice and BOTH times it was mashed potatoes!! I'm only 1 month

post op and was really trying to start on the solids, but not at that

expense! Unpleasant is saying it lightly. I almost think it is the amount

that causes me to dump. I eat more that I realize because my head is racing

ahead of my tummy. Whatever it is, mashed potatoes are gone

forever!!!!!!!!!!! Funny how you can start to hate something you use to

love!! Guess that's the thin line mom told me about! lol

I think I dumped! I got so weak I had to lay down, my heart was racing like

I had ran a mile (as if I'd know :o)) I started sweating, and was just about

sure I was dieing, It felt like I was in a capsule or something, really

wasn't aware of anything around me I felt so sick. Then in about 45 min it

was if nothing had happened. I never did throw up, felt like maybe I could

have but that is something I detest and only will if it is beyond my

control. My little girl (8 yrs old) set beside me on the bed rubbing my

head telling me it would be ok and WE would never eat mashed potatoes again!

What do you think?? Classic dump?

Hi Rosemary,

Thanks for sharing that, sweetie. It is really true that one person's manna

is another's poison, I guess! I made runny mashed potatoes yesterday and

they were so yummy! But I only had a small amount. So far, at 2 wks post-op

I haven't dumped--I hope that when I get on more " regular " foods I don't, as

it doesn't sound too pleasant!~ LOL

Pleasant it isn't! I hope I never have to experience it again. When I was

preop I thought dumping was kinda like feeling full and being nauseated,

sort of like after Thanksgiving. NOT! It is a horrible experience, go slow

with whatever you try, trust me! :o)
