Hello friends -

Luke has been GF/CF for a little over a year. His

diapers went from very mushy / diarehea to halfway

formed sort of clayish when we went to GF/CF. Quite

often he'd have small little balls of formed turds

inside a bigger clayish mass.

I was investigating SCD, and initally tried replacing

Luke's rice milk w/'almond milk'. We noticed that

after a few days, Luke's diapers went back to mushy.

Stopping the almond milk (and almond flour muffins),

his diapers returned to 'normal' in a few days.

Investigation of the contents of the almond milk

revealed it had cane syrup, an illegal SCD ingredient,

and one of the few flat our sweeteners my son has ever

had.

It occurred to me that what we might be seeing here is

validation of his need to be on SCD. What does the

group think about this theory?

1) While getting all kinds of wheat in his pre GF

days, complex carbs got through into his intestine and

he had diarehea / very splattery diapers.

2) When we went GF, we greatly reduced the amount of

carbs getting down into his system. However, he was

still getting some in the forms of grains like rice

and corn, and lots of fresh fruit (but very little,

refined sugar or otherwise sweetened products). He

would form some normal stools, but eventually enough

undigested carbs got down the pipes that everything

got shot through, thus we saw formed poops inside a

larger mass.

3) I fed him cane syrup, loaded with sucrose and

enough got through that his system started back up

with the diarehea.

I'm considering a test of giving Luke some highly

sugary items and monitoring his diapers there after.

Has anyone performed a similar benchmark with success

or failure? Anyone have any suggestions of what to

give him?

Also, I'm curious if there is a chance that the influx

of almonds in the milk and almond flour muffins I made

him caused the loose stools? Anyone have any advice

for me on that?

Luke, 3 yr old ASD, just starting SCD.

Thanks you!

brian

I can't address every quiry that you made but I do think that the almonds

products are counterproductive if the intro diet is not done first.

The SCD is not really meant to be a nut diet either so my suggestion is that

putting Luke on the intro diet first and monitoring his diapers for a month

whilst on SCD. Intro diet is only for a maximum of 5 days whereafter, other easy

to digest foods are introduced. There is a stages chart at www.pecanbread.com

under food Preparation. This is a guide but a very helpful one. Almond products

are given in the later stages of the diet.

Even after 5 years on SCD I still don't digest almonds real well. I have a few

things per day but not much. My diet consists more of cheeses, veggies, fruits

etc. In the beginning stages all veggies and fruits should be peeled, seeded and

cooked.

Welcome to you and Luke!

Naturally the concensus here will favor atrial of SCD with the Intro Diet and

without SCD

illegal foods.

This can lead to ketosis. SCD only restrict a type of carbs not the amount.

Bad gut bacteria feed on such foods.

Perhaps you did not realize these things are very harmful to a damaged gut.

Why not give him a try at removing items that induce toxicty instead of

experimenting on

the poor little guy? It sounds like he's suffered on these counter indicated

foods.

Nuts should be introduced later and not used in large amounts.

I find sugar stuff is way to prevalent in our kids foods! I consider

sugars equil to cocaine in its negative effects to the body. So I

would never give sugar to see how a child does. I believe your

answer was correct in assuming that the problem was with the sugar.

If you must do a test...try finding or making your own alond milk

that has no sugary substances in it.

Good to see a dad working so hard to support his child!

Cheers!
