Guest guest
My wife has CP as I have stated here in the past. About 7 months ago, her PCP gave her a Calcium supplement to take daily. During that time, her CP attacks increased in frequency,ie: from 1 attack every 3 months to one attack every 10 days!! The prescription for those supplements expired and now has not taken any Calcium for over 6 weeks. Since stopping these supplements, she has not had one attack now in 5 weeks !!! Bottom line is, does anyone see any correlation between the Calcium supplements and the formation of pancreatic stones being formed ? Does the Calcium have any affect on the pancreas and it's duct work ? Am I reaching in my suspicion's that it does ? Thanks, I read this forum daily and wish you all a pain free, comfortable day. Guest guest
Fred, I can relate to you what my doctor told me. After my pancreas duct was " fixed " , I am still having pains when I drink cold drinks or carbonated drinks. My PCP, when I told her this said that it could be due to the nerve that winds around the digestive tract being over sensitive due to all of my pancreatitis attacks. She actually recommended I take a blood pressure tablet to stop the amount of calcium that is in my body, as the calcium circulates around the pancreas, and up and down the digestive tract, and can help to cause the pains I've been experiencing..so with what you've said about your wife being on and off the calcium supplements sort of supports that possibility.. Guest guest
Fred, All I can tell you about is my experience with calcium. First of all, I have chronic pancreatitis with two pseudocysts. My pancreas has burned out and films show excessive calcification all throughout my pancreas. Last year, my Internist ordered a bone density test on me and it was discovered that I have osteophenia. She immediately prescribed calcium tablets. As soon as my gastroenterologist heard about this, he told me to stop taking them. He said that the additional calcium would contribute to my pancreatic pseudocyst activity and could cause additional harm. Consequently, I do not take the additional calcium tablets. I don't know what affect this will have on the osteophenia, but we felt that the condition of my pancreas is more important. With hope and prayers, Heidi Heidi H. Guest guest
Fred, I can't answer that one since I only took them two days before my GI found out and told me to stop. That wasn't enough time to make any judgement. With hope and prayers, Heidi Heidi H. Griffeth South Carolina SC & SE Regional Rep. PAI, Intl. Guest guest
Fred, I don't know if it the supplements, but one of the causes listed for pancreatitis is hypercalcemia (excess calcium). You might want to have her doctor look into that. Also, you might want to do a web search on hypercalcemia and pancreatitis and see waht information comes up.
