Guest guest
Hi there- The majority of us here have chosen to get a band/helmet for our children, though there are a few that succeeded in avoiding a band by doing aggressive repositioning. I did some repo when my baby was younger (2-4 months old) mostly for tort, but was then told it would round out on its own and never advised to try anything more aggressive. So a year went by but his head was still really misshapen. We then got him a band at 17 months old. How old is your son? If he's younger than 6 months old or so, you may have success with aggressive repositioning. But you have to commit to it, and possibly set a time limit for when you'll stop and reevaluate to see if a band is the better option. From my experience though, little changes naturally in a year's time, so I would not advise just letting it go and seeing if it fixes itself. There is an older plagio group you can join that have a lot of members who did not band and still regret not doing something about their now older children who still have plagio. Guest guest
We have not decided yet either. The doctor does not seem that concerned and really has given us no advice besides what we already do, and says we should wait until 6 months for any talk on a band. Right now we are trying eveything we can to avoid the band. It seems to look a bit better but not quick enough. Guest guest
Hi, My son Logan is 5.5 month. We have seen PT, doing the repositioning since 1.5 months. When we took him to see the pediatrician at 4.5 months, there was no visible improvement. And the ped agreed that that banding maybe be needed and referred us to BC children's hospital. When we went there when he is slightly over 5 month, the OT there thought his plagio is severe and asked us to go ahead with the helmet. However just during that one week, we saw significant improvement, I couldn't really believe my own eyes, so I took him to see another ped, and she said Logan's case is mild to moderate, doesn't need banding. The appointment at local orthotic clinic is 2 months away, I was leaning toward just wait and see. And re-evaluate when our appointment with local clinic comes up when Logan is 7.5 months. But my husband doesn't want to miss the window of opportunity (5-6 months). He wants to do everything that he can, and have no regrets later. So we have ordered the helmet from a Hanger clinic in WA. We are going down again in 2 weeks for our fitting. Too bad CT is too far, not a very feasible option for us in BC Canada. Cheers, Alison > > My son has mild-moderate plagiocephaly, and we're really on the fence > as to what we should do. I think that a lot of people who choose not to get the helmet must not be in these groups too much, because certainly there must be many people who choose not to get it. My guy is almost 6 months and just graduated from pt for torticollis. He has mild to mod plagio. He's also getting cranial sacral therapy and we've been repositioning since he was a month old. I was disappointed when I received responses from my post because I asked for people who did not get the helmet to respond, which only one did. But I did get a lot of responses from moms who did go for it and they were all very discouraging about not getting the helmet, even telling me my child will certainly resent me for not getting him one later in life. This feedback was not only unhelpful but unwelcomed (I asked for responses from those who didn't get the helmet to get a truly balanced perspective.) Anyway i'm rambling, but I just want to say don't get discouraged if you choose not to get the helmet. My son's headshape will never be perfectly symmetrical but his face and ears and all look fine and I am happy with his appearance. Our pediatrician and physical therapist are not encouraging a helmet at all. Whatever choice you make will be the right one for your child. If our cases are not severe and there are no physical problems as a result I think it's okay to consider not getting one. If you decide you want to it seems moms are happy with having made that choice. Best wishes and follow your heart.
Guest guest
There are some repo successes here including Becky, one of the moderators, and Angie. It may be that the day you posted both were too busy to repond but they are both very active in the group. Also you can try searching old message to find some info. It is true that most people in the group have banded, but not 100%. also if you look at the olderplag group in you'll find many parents who didn't band (most missed the chance), but generally they are the ones that are not happy they skipped banding. I can tell you that our specialist (cranio facial plastic surgeon) had 2 daughters with about 6 mm of asymmetry and he didn't band them and they got some correction by age 4 and 6 (this is the time I saw him, I haven't been in touch since). -christine sydney 3 yrs starband grad > > > > My son has mild-moderate plagiocephaly, and we're really on the fence > > as to what we should do. Guest guest
Well I will tell you that my doctor said the same thing. He said don't even think about it until about 6 months. What a dope! I thought she would be fine and it would get better. IT DOESN'T!!! So at 6 months I noticed it was bad and decided I would do it without him. I went to a specialist and she said she had SEVERE plagio. How was I suppose to know. I am a new mom and this is all so new to me. All of a sudden I was being rushed by everyone being told I should have started much sooner becuase it was so severe. She is know 8 1/2 months old and we did band her. I will tell you My husband and I were pretty against it at first. My opinion started to turn when I joined The older plagio group posted some questions in there. (They all regret not banding BTW) I looked at the pictures and realized I needed to do somethign quick. I have the most beautiful blonde haired blue eyed angel, and don't want to give her anything more than normal to stress about. Once we did the scan I noticed how off her ears are, she has horrible front bossing of the forehead and the head is sloped down in the front. I never would have seen it if I hadn't had it checked, but it does get worse. Just go look through those pic on that group. There is a girl that looked like an older version of my angel and it is noticable. I wanted to do everything I could for her now while she won't remeber. > > > > From: rquartaro <rquartaro@> > > Subject: Anyone on here choose not to get a helmet? > > Plagiocephaly > > Date: Tuesday, February 10, 2009, 9:20 PM > > > > > > > > > > > > > > My son has mild-moderate plagiocephaly, and we're really on the > fence > > as to what we should do.
