Guest guest
Cindy, Both of my boys reacted to baths with hyperactivity until I started putting epsom salts in the water. I don't know if that will make a difference for your son, but it's an inexpensive thing to try. Jody mom to -7 and -9 SCD 1/
Guest guest
Are you doing epsom salts in the bath? That might help. Some kids react negatively to chlorine in the water. When bathing or showering, you actually breath it in as it off-gasses from the warm water. You might consider a filter on the bath tap. I had to put one on the shower head... then installed one of those hand-held shower hoses, so I could lay it down in the tub to fill for Katera's bath. Patti hyper and not sleeping Can anyone give me any suggestions on sleep? My son seems to get very hyper after his bath, needs melatonin (1mg) to get to sleep, and then gets back up usually 2-3 hours later for the rest of the night. Once he is up, he is up running and playing for at least five more hours. Any suggestions are appreciated. thanks, Cindy mom of Kasam ASD
Guest guest
I'm new to this, but from what I've read, I'm pretty sure that melatonin is illegal. So I have ordered some GABA from Kirkman labs. I guess I'll see if that helps. As far as non-diet ideas, you can find tons of stuff in places like magazine articles. No TV (or any other type of screen-time I would suppose) after 6 or 7 in the evening. Quiet time for 20-40 minutes prior to bed time. maybe reading or playing just so long as you watch out for him getting more active and encourage him to settle down if he gets to running or jumping. No long naps during the day. No sleeping in really late in the morning. I'll think of more ideas later. With these types of ideas you can just pick and choose which ones to try and if necessary come back and choose some more to try. You never know which one or what combination of things might work best. I used to take L-tryptophan when I was a teenager, but since our FDA made that illegal and then never reinstated it, I haven't used it in ages. I don't suppose you live in Canada? Then you could try that. If I remember right it is an amino acid, so I'm guessing that it would be legal, although I can't find it listed as legal or illegal. I've also used Valerian in the past, but since it is also not mentioned on my legal/illegal list I'm not sure if I'd try it now, while I'm trying to get started on SCD. Guest guest
Hi Cindy Im a begginer SCD. My son has seizures (tiny seizures) but just one is enough to get hyper after the next hours and he can't sleep. some times we have been awake until 3am. Two weeks ago the nutritionist recommended us for those situations give him meat (Protein and fat) it really sounds crazy but it works. The last two seizures we tried it, one he was awake until 1 am and I gave him 60gr of meat and 40gr of avocado, he fell asleep on less 20 minutes. You can try it. Guest guest
Thanks for the advice. We are new to SCD as well. Kasam has never been much for sleep, but it seems to be worse lately. I will try the protein and fat kind of thing and see what happens. I am also trying his bath earlier tonight and took away the epsom salt. Thanks again, Cindy, mom of Kasam ASD 4 1/2, SCD 1 week!! > > Hi Cindy > Im a begginer SCD. Guest guest
Patti What was the brand of your filter? Where did you get it? Guest guest
I bought mine from allergybegone.com ... it's the " April Original " ... very inexpensive. Lots of other sites have the same one, or very similar. This one is okay. I think I might buy an Aquasana next time (www.aquasanausa.com ), but it costs a bit more. Guest guest
Have you tried epsom salt baths? Magnesium Sulfite helps you to relax. Also chamomile tea or sleepy time tea works well to encourage sleep. Many children have problems with refined sugars and dyes (especially red). Hope this helps. in NJ
Guest guest
Sheryl Thanks for all of your suggestions, tried most of them. Melatonin is the only way to get him even in the right direction of the bed, it is only 1 mg. I don't want to use it, but most nights I am desperate. I am researcing phenols in foods right now. The website I found mentioned some phenols can cause hyperactivity, trouble getting to bed, and then waking in the night and not going back to sleep. This is our situation exactly. So, now I am playing around with the foods more, what little we can have yet. Our big enemy I feel is the grape juice. I put him back on pear yesterday (w/o added sugar) and also took out egg yolks (both high in phenols). He slept 5 1/2 hours last night, better than it has been for quite a while. He was on pear before starting the diet for about one month, sleep had improved greatly. He used to drink apple or grape which are both high in phenols. Guest guest
Jay, becomes very yeasty with juice of any kind, he now drinks water, much better and such a good habit to pick up, best wishes Josie x > > Cindy, > You know you can use the Welch's white grape juice, too? Guest guest
Thanks Patti He was drinking both kinds of juice and I truly believe that was a big culprit. We are trying baths earlier in the evening and have gone back without epsom salts, might try again later. We have went 9 out of 11 nights without full sleep. I have decided to keep a close eye on phenols and see what happens. Thanks Cindy, mom of Kasam 4 1/2 ASD, SCD 11 days > > Cindy, > You know you can use the Welch's white grape juice, too? Legal teas are peppermint, spearmint and weak black tea. Sheila, SCD 2/01, UC 22yrs mom of and
