Guest guest
Peggy ~ I have 3 aquariums at home; 55gal Marine, 10gal fresh for a turtle and 2gal for a goldfish. It really depends on the type of aquarium you're looking into getting. Cool thing about them is that no matter what type you like; marine or fresh, there are animals that you can get that will also help clean the tanks. If you have any more questions about them that I can help with... Just let me know! Danie (CF Parents) Aquariums I was just wondering if any of you have aquariums and how hard they are to keep clean. My boys, both have CF, want a big aquarium for their birthday or Christmas, and I am kind of nervous about it. Guest guest
I would be interested in this information also. I love fish and always wonder how they keep the aquarium so clean. Tina W. Guest guest
We had one for a while and liked it bunches. Patti loved to watch the fish while she took her breathing treatments. You would need to be the one to keep the water and filters clean as the fish bacteria/disease that they call ick is actually a form of psuedo.. I always cleaned the tank and changed the water after every one was in bed. Dawn mom of 4, 7 and under, the youngest wcf
Guest guest
I've had a 95 gallon saltwater aquarium for 3 1/2 years and I've no problems with them. People always say how well cfer's do at the beach, so I figure since I can't live at the beach, I'll bring the beach to us Tyler knows to keep his fingers out of the tank and leave my stuff alone......I've recently put up a 20 gallon saltwater tank in his room and slowly teaching him about them. They are very relaxing, watching the bright colored fish swimming around. they are not that hard to keep up. Guest guest
Well, the reason why I got a tank was because Tyler was so mesmerized with the saltwater tank in his CF docs office. I figured if it was ok for her to have one in the office it would be ok to have one in my house. Tyler has always loved watching them and even now he will get all excited and tell me to " come here " and he'll show me the starfish that has come out to eat. So I have our CF doc to thank for getting me into saltwater fish!! Dawn mom to Tyler 5.5 w CF > You always come up with the best ideas. That is super. Guest guest
When was started on one of her meds (I can't remember if it was Tobi or Pulmozyme) I was told that it can kill tropical fish. something about the arisolized med in the air and getting in the water of the tank..........I don't know. You might want to check with the docs..... Re: (CF Parents) Aquariums I've had a 95 gallon saltwater aquarium for 3 1/2 years and I've no problems with them. Guest guest
I remember the same as ... several years ago I remember reading that someone always did their nebs near their fish tank and it killed off the fish. Also, once I asked about the aquarium question and several people wrote to me privately cautioning against aquariums. I guess it all depends upon the air filtration system you have. Some of those air filters bubble stuff into the air -- mycobacteriums were a concern that we were cautioned against. was working at a lake convenience store at the time, so after reading the cautions, he told his boss he wouldn't be able to clean the minnow tanks without an approved respirator. Back to the meds -- I always hated using the computer after did his TOBI treatments. Eventually TOBI accumulated a thick coat on the monitor and made the keyboard feel tacky, requiring more frequent cleaning. I always worried about the inhaled meds getting into the monitor vents, mingled with dust, and perhaps clogging it up. Has anyone else noticed this or had more odd computer problems if your child does nebs on the computer? And here's a huge tip for those who do neb treatments in the car and are thinking of doing GSH -- *don't* inhale GSH in the car! GSH neb treatments will gunk up the car air vents. One early GSH user went through two brand new cars, thinking he bought lemons, before figuring out they were messing up the car with the GSH nebs. Guest guest
Peggy, I have a 40 gallon tank. It is a big huge pain in my ***. My husband thought that the boys would like it and of course they do and of course I get to clean it. It takes me all day sometimes if it gets really bad. Not to mention that I have a killer fish in there so I am unable to put anything in there with him. He has eatten 5 fish. YUCK> the stupid thing is that he is only as big as my index finger. Don't get it!!!!!! I am sure that your boys will love it. Are they old enough to take care of it so that you don't have to? Love to you Ashauna
Guest guest
What kind of filtering system do you use perhaps I need to look into a new one. Ashauna
Guest guest
Dawn, this is good to know about the bacteria. I guess that you would figure that the bacteria was bad those filters get really grose. Now I know that I for sure will always be the one to clean Ashauna
Guest guest
Hmmmm......that is definitely something worth looking into. I've had some of my fish mysteriously disappear from the tank and I never could figure out why...I figured it was because I was slacking on the water changes...and now that I think about it, Tyler used to do his treatments right by the fish tank (TOBI included), now he does them on the couch....thanks for the tip I am definitely going to look into it now!! Guest guest
To be honest I really do not know. It was some really expensive thing that my husband picked up. I will have to ask him. What type do you use Thanks Ashauna
