Guest guest
, I had to laugh because my husband says those things FREQUENTLY to me and cheats (w/food) often. He is a much more pleasant person to be around though when he is on the diet. I only make SCD foods in the house. If DH wants to cheat, he can but I suspect that at some point the benefits will be enough of a reward to not cheat (at least not as often). He doesn't have any stomach issues though (although he has ADD). ) KELLI Kai 3 3/4 (ASD) & Tatum 2 (NT) House is SCD (since 5/05) in support of son w/ ASD _____ From: pecanbread [mailto:pecanbread ] On Behalf Of D. For breakfast, I made banana pancakes. I had two ripe bananas on the counter that I mashed and added two eggs to. I then pulled two frozen black bananas out of the freezer, and tried to mash them into the mixture. I should have mashed them separate. When I went for the egg, I decided since they were shrively, I'd only add one egg with the two bananas. They were hard to flip, and fried fast. My boys both turned their noses up. Youngest had a hard boiled egg from the fridge. Oldest just went back to his computer. Dear husband, (aka DH) tried the " pancake " and balked, so I made him scrambled eggs. I left the remaining mixture on the counter, until a bit later when dear daughter (dd) came in and wanted something. I had her try some cold, and she decided to go for a hot one. I had already added the fourth egg (now 1:1 ratio again) and the pancake looked more like a pancake, and flipped easily this time. She loved them! While she ate, I cooked the last 3 and ate one myself, which I tolerated. Then, I made the gelatin, in a mini muffin tin, so they'll be little finger bites. I used Welch's grape juice for that. I also threw in a portion of the last turkey I made, into a pot, added a bay leaf, a garlic clove, and 3 carrots, plus part of an onion. Later, I will chop the veggies fine, and debone the broth. I realize this isn't entirely intro diet fare, but I have been met with grouchy attitudes already. All three kids had a spoonful of the " new peanut butter " , and the boys were not particularly impressed. Dd discussed with me all the food she will miss while we're doing this diet. " How will I survive without chocolate? What about pizza? It'll just be wrong without that too! OH, and NO bread? pop? spaghetti?? What, no mozz cheese either?? " They all act like they will " suffer " through this, for me. So, I really need positive talk right now. My family is doing this very begrudgingly. Which, btw is what I expected. lol 1st day scd with (13 - ASD), Dani (dd - 11) and Tanner (8 - fights constipation) plus dh (35 LOL deals with heartburn)
Guest guest
Hi : We are also on day 1, or at least pseudo day 1, in case we make any errors. Mostly what I need to do is change out all his supplements, as many of them are illegal, including his enzymes. I forgot about all of that. We are starting right out of the gate with chicken soup, and I must say it is delicious. Just plain with onion, celery and carrots. I also reserved some chopped chicken for him which he is snacking on. The grape juice jello is also a hit. No complaints here yet, but it's only 3 p.m. He ate his eggs for breakfast and was ok with that. I've got 2 older teenagers who just aren't around much. The middle guy is at camp, so that's good. We will have to train him when he gets back. My older daughter is 18 and is sort of helping me cook, but I had to toss out her mint choco chip ice cream last night. Milk for the older ones wil be a problem. .we will have to hide it in the fridge. I baked some of the dairy free bread off the pecanbread site - it is pretty good, but we're not going to introduce it until later. I'm finding that just staying home, playing in the backyard and just having handy snacks out all day keeps him happy. As soon as we leave the house, he will get it in his mind that he wants an Icey from 7/11 or a lollypop or something. We just have to stickclose to home over the intro days and keep things less stressful. He likes the Welche's juices, so we're ok there. We'll see how things go tomorrow, though. i think that's when things will get rough. I'm lucky, though, that he really wasn't a huge potato or rice eater before. He does like his cereal, though, but he also loves those Midas Gold pancakes .. ..heck, I love those pancakes! So far so good here. " D. " wrote: Okay, I'm probably not doing this right at all, but I will just need to plow through, and do what I can and slowly maybe have to go backward or something... Whoa and welcome, Did you do the " Intro Diet " ? It sounds like you did not. I think you overdid the bananas and the eggs. No food should be given at once in such a copious amount. We have both spaghetti and pizza recipes for SCD but let's wait a bit and get you off to a better start. Have you read the book and the websites that ask you to clear the decks and get the digestive system ready for major changes with a simple introductory diet which is followed for two days if no diaharrea is present and up to five days if there is? Staring cart before horse will not banish grouchy symptoms. In fact they are a sign that die off is occurring as the bad bacteria starve. Can we get you to begin again in the specified manner? i think it will be better. Then introduce new food gradually is small amounts, one food at a time. > . > > Carol F. Guest guest
I guess it might sound like I made a ton of pancakes, but really, there are 5 of us. I made what I expected would be a decent amount. Also, I took these food ideas STRAIGHT from the BTVC book, and/or from the Pecanbread website. I printed a list of meal ideas for the intro diet. I planned out what we could eat for the weekend, so that we'd do intro only foods all weekend, and that way, on Monday, I could add a few things to make the work week a bit easier. My kids are used to donuts on Saturday. They are used to sandwiches, and chips - pasta, and other very starchy things for several meals a day. Weekend fair generally has pizza in it. We've been eating out way too much lately, so that is yet another area we will be changing our habits. :-) I THINK my turkey soup was pretty good for the intro diet. turkey, carrots, plus I added some things that may have needed to wait...onion, bay leaf, and garlic. But I gotta give them flavor, or they won't try ANYTHING I give them. I have to make this somewhat tasty or they won't try anything. I will keep trying to do only the legal stuff, but it isn't going to be easy. What IS the intro, if this is NOT? I have the book, and as previously stated, have found several places that state what we can have intro wise, but I gotta add a bit of flavor. - Did you do the " Intro Diet " ? Guest guest
Hi , You said: <<What IS the intro, if this is NOT?>> Bananas aren't on the intro diet. Intro is listed in the book in the chapter " Introducing the Diet " .... and Elaine lists a sample menu. In my copy (10th edition), it's on page 51. That collection of just a few foods is what is highly recommended to be followed... for just two days. There is a section on variations of intro on the pecanbread website, also.... click " Food Preparation " and scroll down. Some families have found it just impossible to do the intro diet, so have included legal foods that are not on it.... but it's really best to start with the true intro. Quite a few families have started SCD.... not done intro... then gone back to do a day or two of it later and seen marked improvement. It just really " clears the decks " so to speak.... sets the gut up for success. I understand your dilemma.... and you have to do the best you can. I don't see a problem with adding those bay leaves and garlic, if you're pulling them out. Onion is used in the intro chicken soup (recipe on page 68 in my book). Be a little aware that turkeys often have ingredients added to them.... basting seasonings (including possible illegals) injected in under the skin. So, hopefully it was an all natural turkey that didn't have that? Patti
Guest guest
hi melissa, hang in there. sorry your family is giving you a hard time but it will hopefully be worth it. i started the diet only two weeks ago for ulcerative colitis. but i had also been eating bananas thinking this would be a good way to firm up my diarrhea problem. then a couple of days ago my dh was getting on me saying if i am going to try this diet i really need to stick to it just like the book says. so i quit the bananas and ate only fish with garlic, the chicken/carrot soup from the book, and scd yogurt with a little honey (i would be eating eggs and the BTVC cheesecake also if not for my diarrhea). on the FIRST day without bananas i started seeing signs of die-off. i think those bananas, while legal, were still sending down enough undigested carbs to keep some nasty bacteria and such fed and happy. so i will repeat what Patti said and tell you to just do the intro, be strict about it, and it's only for a couple of days if you're not having diarrhea. (5 days or so if you are having D). then you can start adding some more interesting things that the family will like better too. hope you are hanging in there!!! heather uc, scd 7/1/
