We later received his genetics which clearly showed high protein diets were drowning our son in ammonia. .....causing the aggression and severe self abuse. His gut is such a mess though. Multiple loose mushy stools daily since forever. Long history of yeast. Long history of eating gf/cf/soy free......but with a preference for fruit and high carb stuff. I'm afraid to try scd again.....because he's so darn picky....I can't get him to expand to other things.....so the scd for him is protein only( squash pancakes and chicken nuggets). But I'm wondering if we could go ahead and give him the yogurt. ...??? Just looking for some feedback. Will giving yogurt to a child NOT on scd diet, and with chronic loose stools help or hurt the gut? thanks, beth ________________________________________ Loving Care,Grammy Gay IBS-1930, IBD-1984, SURGERY-1988, CD-1994, SCD-1997, REMISSION-1998, NO-MEDS. Guest guest
Hi Beth, Yes, I am sure the yogurt would be great for anyone, whether they are all the way on the SCD or not. I make batches for my non-SCD dad... just because he loves it so much. He feeds a little bit of it to his dog, and it's improved the animal's chronic flakey skin condition! You didn't really say how long your son was on SCD before. A few weeks? You were probably seeing die-off, too.... along with the metabolic issues of too much protein for him, not balanced by enough carbohydrate. I think you can really get into trouble doing SCD with not enough carbs. It almost ends up becoming more like a Ketogenic diet (which my daughter used to be on, for seizure control). Those Keto kids are on the razor's edge of getting sick all the time.... it's really got to be monitored closely by a doctor. Will your son not drink juice? Or maybe something like yogurt smoothies made with cooked fruits? I think if you could get *enough* squash into him, that would provide some great carbs.... but it's a matter of how much volume he's willing to take in. For seriously picky eaters like your son, I'd really advise easing into SCD gradually.... and then going back and doing the intro diet later maybe. It's better that way than not doing SCD at all. Thing is, if you can just get a certain degree of healing behind you, and get the starchy grain-based carbs out for long enough, the pickiness generally gets better with most kids and they begin accepting foods parents thought they never would. So... why not go ahead and try the yogurt? I would, if I were you! Patti, mom to Katera both of us back on SCD since 5/27/06.... after being SCD for 18 months ending in 2004. Katera for seizure control and mild GI issues, me for comraderie's sake and b/c I feel better. (ACK! That's too much to type every time!) Re: Going to retry the intro diet etc. , Please do not stop the yogurt! It will speed the healing process. mimi Also, they've been on the goat yogurt already, should I stop it or continue? If I must stop it, when can I restart it? > Appreciate your time, > > > >
Guest guest
Just eating the yogurt, can't help, but help. This is my opinion. Have you tried a consult with one of the SCD councilors???? http://www.pecanbread.com/SCD_Solutions.html<http://www.pecanbread.com/SCD_Solut\ ions.html> Think about it....try not to be so scared. They may be able to help you modify SCD so that your son doesn't have such a problem with high protein. I hope that you give this a try again. If his gut could finally heal with SCD, his metabolic problem with proteins could vanish. Elaine says in her book that often when the gut is damaged it causes a " entero-metabolic problem " , that this isn't the same as a true " metabolic problem " ...that this metabolic dysfunction resides in the intestines because they are so out of balance and sick. WE too are having metabolic concerns right now....a little different though. Trying to figure out what is going on with our little girl too. More than likely it is because of her damaged gut though. I am " almost " certain of this. Hang in there with the rest of us! Antoinette and (celiac), parents to three kids on SCD (CELIAC, leaky gut, add, adhd, autism and hyperekplexia), entire family SCD since 2/
Guest guest
Patti, I was reading throught Seth's site www.healingcrow.com and came across this article. It does talk about other fermenting things and not just yogurt though. His site has some questions and answers by Elaine. Pearl Please Use Caution: Before we get too far into fermenting your own foods, we want to emphasize two caveats of fermentation. First, the process of fermentation is only good for you if it occurs outside of your body. What does this mean? It means that if you ingest foods that provide an abundance of sugar and growth media for bacteria, they will ferment those foods inside of you. An overgrowth of fermentative bacteria in your body can cause all kinds of medical problems, including Crohn’s Disease, Ankylosing Spondylitis, candidiasis , and Irritable Bowel Syndrome. So the key is to pre-ferment your foods, that is to say, ferment your milk before you eat it. Secondly, please do not eat spoiled fermented foods. In some rare instances, fermented foods can be overtaken by mold or become spoiled. In these cases, throw out the result and start anew. __________________________________________________
Guest guest
I'm sorry, my previous email on this subject was to Beth, not Patti. __________________________________________________
