Guest guest
Hi Kathleen, I am a real newbie to this, but based on what my other Rheumatologist said, and now Dr. Buckner, until my body has built up enough with the help of the Methotrexate, the flares will keep happening. And because it takes a while to ramp up on that, as well as for it to kick in, I am not going lower than 40 mgs. on the Pred. because I keep flaring. Dr. Buckner said that once my body is aided by the Metho, we can focus on lowering the Pred., but the flare does damage and that's not something to mess around with. I'd encourage you to talk to the dr about starting the metho right away and increasing the pred., if they agree, until your flare really subsides. Look at that, I sound like I learned something already! Like I said, I'm really new, but that's what I've been advised.... Good luck and my thoughts are with you! > Hi all! > > Well, I was at 15 mg of pred and doing fine and then my nose and throat started to flare. I called the rheumy to see what to do. He told me I could go up to 20 mg, but that the risk for avascular necrosis increases at 20 mg or above. So what am I supposed to do? I went up to 20 mg and it isn't cutting it. I feel like a bad patient because I want to up more and get RID of the pain. Does anyone else have a doctor that doesn't want you to take too much pred? What have you done? We have talked about me going on MTX. Maybe that would do the trick. My next appt. isn't until the 24th, though and I don't want to suffer... I like Heidi's point that we are paying their salaries, but damn, it doesn't feel that way!!!! Is that a class they teach in med school -- " How to keep your patients in line? I was on it and did great but the side effects finally forced me to go off. I was down to 5 mg of pred, but had to raise it last week due to flaring. I went up to 20, but only for 5 days. Now, I am slowly backing down again. Good luck, Sharon ===== __________________________________________________

When I was on 20mg I would change to 30mg. I usually tried the smallest dose I thought would knock it out. I know pred has a lot of side effects and is best to get off as soon as possible, but sometimes it isn't possible. I've been trying for 3 years. I have never had any, and I've had a lot, lol of my drs tell me not to go over 20mg. I don't know what I would do in that case. Maybe look for another dr or get a second opinion. Remind him that with every flare, some damage is done.

This is just my opinion, but from the ones who have totally come off the pred, they have said the the leg pain is a killer for about a year. Guess it takes that long to rebuild the muscles, I don't know. I'm going to ask my new rheumy on the 24th. My PCP told me No, it wasnt the pred. so go figure. Does anyone else have any input on this pain? Hugs
Guest guest
, Thanks so much for the reply. Yes, you do sound like you have learned a lot and I appreciate your willingness to share what you know! I will call on Monday and have a talk with him... Guest guest
All of my doctors want me prednisone-free, but dropping from 40 mg/day to where I'm at now (7.5 mg) has been a challenge. When I tried to go from 30 mg to 20, I started having coughing attacks (airway inflammation). One doctor suggested that I take 30 mg one day, then 20 the next, then 30, 20,30, 20,etc. for one month. It worked! On Feb. 1, I'm going to go down to 5 mg. and hopefully can continue until I'm off. Guest guest
Good Morning Everyone. I have a question: As I've been lowering my prednisone, I've noticed leg aches (thigh muscles, calf muscles) even though I've been religiously walking on that treadmill for almost a year. When I got to about 15 mg, I started noticing the aches-not too bad, but nagging. One doctor said that since the pred is a super anti-inflammatory and I'm not taking as much, I'm just now feeling the pain that may have been there all along, so take some Motrin. My new rheumatologist said he wasn't sure yet why I have this pain, will follow up next visit. I've read about this same complaint from several in the group. Just wondering: Is it the pred? Cytoxan? RP? Old age? Punishment for past sins? Guest guest
The pred is probably causing the problem. I know that I had muscle aches and weakness after I went off the pred. I am sure some of the others in the group will say the same. Of course it could be all of the things you listed.LOL Sometimes I wonder when I first get up in the morning if I really want to get old with all the aches and pains now!LOL At least your Dr. are aware of it and that is the main thing. Just upsets me that they don't know more about the problems that pred cause. My Dr. told me I couldn't be allergic to pred. Well I think I was/am and I know my sister is. She had a violent reaction to it and they can't give it to her anymore. Take care Lots of Love Glenda Good Morning Everyone. Guest guest
I too had problems when going off of pred. Body aches and breathing were a lot worse. My body eventual adjusted to not having the pred dependence and I am doing OK now, but it is a big adjustment, especially if you've been on high doses and/or a long period of time on it. Just remember, some here can never go off the pred because their body has grown totally dependent on it. It's the drug we love to hate, but it does help keep us alive, but the side effects are huge, so you have got to weigh your options. W >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> .. Guest guest
Thanks for your input. I have really worried about pred dependence and wanted to get off of it as soon as I could. As I said, the aches aren't bad, just nagging. The breathing is much more laborious, and I feel like my endurance has been cut in half. Did your's get a little easier as your body adjusted to being off pred? How long did it take? I'd like it to be soon, but am learning through this group that it can take as long as a year. If I had the energy, I'd get impatient. But with RP, I'm having to learn to conserve that energy and use it more wisely. Such a life-style change, huh? Again, thanks. --- Original Message ----- From: Woods To: Rpolychondritis Sent: Sunday, January 13, 2002 4:04 PM Subject: Re: Pred ? I too had problems when going off of pred. Guest guest
, It did get easier, but it took months for my body to finally kick back in and start working on it's own again. I still don't think my breathing is as good as before, but at least I did get off the pred. Some can never do that. Yes, it does take quite a while to get off of it completely, so try not to be impatient. The slower you do it, the better your chances of not having a flare up. Good luck girl, W >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> .. Did your's get a little easier as your body adjusted to being off pred? How long did it take?
