Guest guest
Hi Janet, Since he has not been on the diet very long, I'm wondering about the fresh juices. This is kind of a gray area. When juicing, you remove the fiber, making it not a digestion issue. But, carrot juice does have a lot of natural sugar. I've said this before to other parents... it could be that it sates his hunger and makes him not as willing to eat other foods. Are you using small amounts? And diluting? I am not saying it's illegal.... although technically BTVC does say to " peel and cook " all fruits and veggies in the beginning (I'd say that at only six weeks in, you're still very much at the beginning). Elaine was a bit leary of fresh juices and was concerned that we only use small amounts at first. I'm not sure if fresh, raw juices are quite as easy on the gut as cooked veggies/fruits. Your other statement: <<I'm worried too much and the veggies will eventually get worked into his diet?>> Could be very true! It's a lot of pressure on us moms, isn't it? All the worrying about whether or not they're getting enough? take care, Patti Veggies/ Was:Re: Dry Curd Cottage Cheese Lifespan??? I've managed to get plenty of butternut in, some zucchini if peeled (no green showing). I guess I feel like he needs more " greens " - green beans, broccoli, spinach and such that are harder to sneak. He will happily drink fresh carrot juice made w/ granny smith apple and a bunch of spinach- I hope that's OK for where we are at w/ cooked fruits. He will also only eat bits of meat when coaxed or I have to say, no more applesauce till you eat a few bites of chicken and so on. If I would let him, he would live off of scrambled eggs and bananas and nothing else. I can't figure out why, but the chicken muffins made him wheeze. Separately, all the ingredients have given him no trouble. That was his only wheezing incident, otherwise he has been doing well. Maybe I'm worried too much and the veggies will eventually get worked into his diet? He is doing really well the last few days- poops are more and more normal by the day. I love the recipes at pecanbread, but haven't tried them all. Will give them another look and look for some higher veggie ones to try. Thanks! Guest guest
Dear Janet, remember what I have to. This is what I remind myself: It took time to get sick, it takes time to heal. Some things hang around....vanish and reappear again. This is the joys of the first year. lol!....but yet not so funny. For some longer than one year. Matters how damaged your intestines where when you arrived. We are only 4 months out....just had a joyous die off again. I feel much better today though. Be prepared. Set backs are part of the healing process. UNLIKE me, try not to freak out over them so much.LOL! This last die off freaked me out a little. We can hang on to each other lol! By the sounds of how he is eating......I do this too, I think we are both worrying toooooo much! Again as addiction and cravings vanish....veggies start to taste better. Until them sneak-em...but don't stress-em. My kids now love straight broccoli....my (at the times 4 year old), came to Pecan Bread a ketchup and French fries addict! Hated anything green...Now it is HULK FOOD he likes! Yet admit he dips his steamed broccoli in apple sauce...we let him. Is your son old enough to watch the " Incredible Hulk " ? All boys want to be strong and " green " ...lol! Hope this helps, Antoinette (2/06 and healing myself and family when no other way worked/problems celiac/add, adhd, autism and more)
Guest guest
<<This just screams at me- TOO MUCH FRUIT!!>> Okay.... good! You see it, too! Yeah, I think kids will automatically steer toward the sweeter tasting foods... and I know what you're saying about there being no problem with his appetite. But what I was trying to say was, he might accept more of the less-sweet stuff... more meat, more veggies... if he weren't allowed that natural sugar fix so much. 'Cause I'm sure he will tell you " Mom... I'm HUNGRY " ... but he means he's hungry for more juice, more fruit sauces, more banana pudding.... NOT that he's hungry for more pot roast and green beans! Right? So see what I'm saying? There is hungry... and then there is HUNGRY. LOL Did I already ask you if you'd tried the sneaky muffin and sneaky pancake recipes Jody has posted on pecanbread.com? I probly did. You can maybe sort of sllllooooowwwwwly adjust the proportions that way, to get his tastebuds adjusted to the less sweet tastes. I know all those fruits are legal... but he may need a little more balance. I wonder why the chicken makes him wheeze? Is this organic chicken? I know most non-organic chicken is fed feed that is laced with arsenic. Nice, eh? best, Patti, mom to Katera
Guest guest
Thanks Patti for the ideas. I will definitely try some more of the sneaky recipes at Pecanbread. As a sweets craver myself, I think I tend to serve the sweets over the veggies, so a lot of it's on me. I get the natural chicken with no antibiotics or hormones, but can't get organic chicken where I'm at He seems OK with small amounts of chicken, it's a lot that gets him. He ate the entire batch of ' Chicken Muffins at supper one night and also several chicken legs another night and both made him wheeze. Otherwise, besides the pecan and coconut flour trials- he's done great w/ his asthma! I like your idea of slllloooowwwly getting him converted to veggies- does avocado count as a veggie or fruit? I tried it plain with him and he hated it, but I thought I could try sneaking it in things to start with. Now, I've just recently had eye surgery and since I'm seeing spots I think I'd better go close my eyes a while! I do appreciate your advice! Guest guest
Janet, You asked: <<I like your idea of slllloooowwwly getting him converted to veggies- does avocado count as a veggie or fruit?>> Well, technically, I guess avacado is a fruit... but I'd think of it as a veggie, b/c it isn't sweet. Yes, it can be a " sneaky " ingredient in various things. I have not personally tried baking it into muffins or anything, but I know it can be done. I sort of mash it into scrambled eggs. Once you're doing yogurt, you can make a great dip with avacado, yogurt, crushed dried basil and dill, a little salt and lemon juice. In fact, salt and lemon juice GREATly enhance the flavor of avacado, imo.... so even if you're not doing yogurt, you might be able to doll it up with those other ingredients and convince him to dip cooked, chilled baby carrots or something. Good luck! Patti
