Guest guest
How do you deal with kids that are terrified of the doctors? I feel we do not get a very good checkup each time. How do other parents deal with it? My six year old refuses to put on the mask and it really makes me mad, but what do I do, I can't force it on her, they just quickly take us to a room when we get there because she refuses to wear a mask. She will not blow the candles off the cake for the respitory therapist, she screams and fights us each time, we just never do that part of the visit. We try each time to prepare her about the visit, what she needs to do and what will happen, but it never works. Abby won't even let them weigh her without putting up a huge fuss and peeing on thier scale. She's scared from the time she gets there until the time she leaves. Poor baby. Guest guest
I don't know what you can do. Seeing your child so upset is really hard on you too. Guest guest
Hi I can really sympathize with you. From way before was diagnosed (9 & 1/2 months) and was just sick all the time, she would scream as soon as we pulled into the driveway of the medical bldg. her ped is in. She wouldn't stop until she was safely in her car seat. It was even worse at CF clinic. Until her 2nd birthday. She finally laughed there and she has enjoyed it ever since (at least she has tolerated it.) The turning point came on her 2nd birthday, she had to go in to have her picc line removed and the doc's knew it was her birthday so they arranged to have all the fellows come in with them and the nurse to sing happy birthday and present her with a gift. It was all that she needed to really get over her fear. " hey they are nice there - they gave me a gift! " Can you bring a gift with you and ask the doc to give it to her? just something small and wrapped. It might give her a bit of confidence when she is there. I never felt like I could hear what the doc was telling me when was screaming, so I brought someone with me to take notes. (my mother-in-law) this might help, too. I hope it works out. Guest guest
Tracey, Is there any part of clinic that takes part in willingly? Like weighing? Pulse-ox? Blood pressure? Or does she simply have an issue with things on her face? How does she do with her nebulizer treatments? And, is she like this other places as well? Some things that have worked for us. I try to let Kate be in control as much as possible. Kids are rarely in control of what happens to them, and this seems especially true of sick kids. So, I ask her for input as much as possible. " Would you like to weigh first or have your blood pressure taken first? " Her doctors are wonderful about letting her " examine " them using the equipment in the room. And I always try to get a new toy (nothing expensive, just something distracting) to take with us. If possible I let her pick it out. Another thought: she might like to see you perform the PFT. Kate LOVES to see me doctored - needle sticks, blood draws, band-aids removed - it's all good to watch! Guest guest
Can you make a chart and tell them if they are good at the doctor's office they can put a star on the chart and then tell them if they have 3 or how every many they want they can get a big prize at the store. Are clinic has a treasure box and if they are good they get to pick a toy out. I really think bribery works GREAT!! Hope this helps
Guest guest
hi tracy, have you tried the mouth piece? if you use it backwards, and plug up the hole on one side, you can just wave it next to her nose and she will get the nebs, thats what i had to do for my son sean who is 6, he hates the mask also. kids are hard, i alsways told people, the one child i have without cf, is the most difficult child i have. if he was sick, that would be a nightmare. he hates everything lol. sometimes you have to hold them down just to get the meds in them, its unfortunate, but you do what you have to do. and sometimes after that you can say, " do you want me to hold you down? or do you want to do this yourself? " it might work. who knows, it worked for me. i always tell my sons who are 8 and 6,, " you brush your own teeth or i will brush them for you " it works every time for me lol. Guest guest
From the time we get there(CF clinic)or(Peds Doctor) she starts whining and clinging to us. I do take my Mother-In-Law with us. We have taken different toys/books/dolls with us to help. Talking to her and asking her to tell us what she is fearing seems to help until they walk in the room. We have to get on the scales with her then they weigh us to get her weight, that is not always correct. Our Clinic requires each patient to wear a surgical mask with a positive culture or not at each visit, well, we have yet to get that mask on. I even at one time took masks home with us to wear around the house. Since her baby sister is more aware of things when we go to clinic we tell her not to make a seen and frighten sissy and to be a brave big sister so sissy won't think this is a bad place to be. That seems to help a little also. Thanks for all the suggestions. We go to Clinic next week and of course I am stressing because of what we have to go thru each visit. Thanks again all of you are great. Tracey 6wcf 2wcf Re: Vest I hope that Shaelin's attitude towards the vest doesn't influence the decision on him getting one. Guest guest
Abby isn't old enough to bribe (19 months). She has had her fill of doctors already. She refuses to let them do anything. She cries and screems the entire time she is there. I feel really bad for her. She had so much done, IV's, spinal tap, blood draws, PICC line, surgery, drainage tubes... that she is scared to pieces. Poor baby. I can't blame her.
