Werner, Avoiding Future Kidney Stones

Hello, Werner,

My husband had kidney stones 3 years ago. The nurse in the ER also had

kidney stones in the past and said that it was MORE painful than giving

birth....!

Here is an article from his doctor that you might find interesting:

AVOIDING FUTURE KIDNEY STONE ATTACKS

Most kidney stones are composed of calcium oxalate. A concentrated urine

can cause stones to crystalize. To prevent this, drink 6-8 extra glasses

of water daily, with one full glass at bedtime (to prevent a concentrated

urine overnight, even if you may have to awakenonce at night to urinate).

You should also decrease the amount of meat in your diet and the amount

of salt as well. This will reduce the amount of calcium in your urine

(which promotes kidney stone formation) and will increase urinary citrate

(which helps dissolve stones). In fact, in a study in the New England

Journal of Medicine published in January 2002, men with a history of

calcium oxalate kidney stones who ate a diet low in animal protein and

salt had half the number of future kidney stones than men who simply ate

a diet low in calcium. Therefore, you should not decrease the amount of

calcium in your diet (this may actually increase kidney stone formation,

even in patients documented to excrete high amounts of calcium in their

urine). In summary, eat more fruits, vegetables, and beans and less

meats. Avoid high sodium foods like pizza, spam, hot dogs, ramen, etc.

Most experts also recommend reducing the amount of oxalate in your diet,

although definitive studies showing that the amount of oxalate ingested

is a risk factor for the disease are lacking. To reduce the level of

oxalate, avoid eating the following: spinich (this has the highest

oxalate content of any food!), Fibre One cereal, Bran flakes, rhubarb,

Swiss chard, ccoa, beets, bell peppers, wheat germ, pecans, peanuts and

peanut butter, okra, chocolate, strong tea, cashews, almonds, lime peel.

Also, don't take more than 500 mg. of Vitamin C daily.

My husband loves pizza and sausages....but, is willing to cut down on

these high sodium foods because he does NOT want to experience another

kidney stone attack...

Best wishes and Aloha,

and

My husband gets kidney stones quite often and so do both my sons,

(even the youngest son has had to have some broken up to pass, he

was only 30 at the time), the kidney doctor in Spokane told my

husband to drink lots of tomato and V8 juice for the type of stones

that he has. Don't know what the connection is.

Hello ,

thanks for the information. I try to consider these aspects.

Generally I dont eat much meat, but more vegetables. So far I had no

pain. The stone had been detected at a regular preventive inspection.

I´ll see what pain it gives when it will be damaged and is going to

pass.

greetings
