Guest guest
Jazz, Elaine was very uncomfortable about people supplementing bifidus strains, because of their potential to overgrow up too high in the gut, for one thing. Have you read her comments on it at her website? You can also search the pecanbread archives. There are messages going back to 2003, with numerous posts coming up that discuss the bifidus issue, explain the problems some list members have had with it, and Elaine's position a little more clearly, maybe. If you just sign in at the list homepage (link is down at the bottom of this message) you can use the " advanced search " function which works really well. Here's a link to one of the messages: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/pecanbread/message/6410, This one was written by Sheila, one of our list moderators (on vacation presently), who describes the difficult problems she personally had after ingesting bifidus supplements. It would be good for you to read some of these, just to see why it is something that was officially NOT included as SCD protocol. There is more discussion about the bifidus issue in the archives at the other list... on the Lyris server... called " Elaine's Children " . Sorry, I don't have a link to that, but it may be listed on Elaine's website. Elaine was aware of the information out there about bifidus, but from what she could learn... and the results she SAW for herself with a number of adults and kids on SCD, she did not feel it was a good idea to supplement it. If you want to use bifidus, that's up to you.... people are free to add on other supplements or whatever. It's just that we who work hard here to moderate the list and stay as true as we can to SCD as outlined by Elaine Gottschall, are not in a position to take her research and opinions and just run with them... expanding on them or doing the additional research needed to convince Elaine's family members, who comprise her estate and who still hold the trademark on SCD itself, to change her body of work. We have our hands tied... and respectfully, we feel that we need to stay within the parameters that worked for Elaine and thousands of people she guided over the years. We just are not in a position to deem things " legal " or " illegal " on our own. We do the best we can. You are certainly free to include whatever you want to in YOUR diet regimen.... in consult with your own health professionals, or based on your own research. But, just know... that at that point, it becomes something other than SCD. When it comes to SCD, that is what this particular list is dedicated to upholding. Discussion of things that go out beyond those boundaries, addition of treatments Elaine did not recommend, etc... belongs on another list. Perhaps the one called Healing Crow? There are a lot of other SCD-ers there.... but they allow a lot of other discussion of additional treatments. We just can't here. thanks for understanding, Patti Re: Re: yogurt starter/probiotics confusion I think this is my point. The book that I am reading is VERY well researched and has many citations that talk about Bifidus/Bifidum being beneficial. Since this book was originally published in 1998 I have to imagine that the research has been around for some time. So, lack of information on these particular strains just doesn't strike me as a good enough answer. I'm wanting to know specifically WHY they are not good on the SCD. I am a Why " person. Just saying it isn't ok makes me want to research it deeper. So, now I have and my research is saying that Bifidus/Bifidum are ok. What is the rationale on SCD for them NOT being ok? Guest guest
Well, I have to admit that I am disheartened by your response. I would have hoped that it was ok to ask questions on this list about things that you honestly did not understand. I asked a legitimate question! Now you are quoting something out of context and telling me that, " it isn't allowed " . How can you say that the quest for information about something that I am investigating to see if I am willing to change my (and my family's life) is not allowed? I want to honestly thank everyone who has, politely and genuinely, answered me about this issue - but, this response is out of line, in my opinion. I was not discussing an alternative diet, illegal foods, treatments or other subject that are not part of the science. What I was doing was quoting from a book that is listed as recommended reading; from a link that I followed when I was reading one of the " official " SCD sites. If the information isn t supposed to be allowed in my head - make sure the book is forbidden reading! I am well educated and do not take ANYONE'S word for gospel simply because it is written in one place. Especially if there is no justification for the statement. Since I could find no justification for the bifidus comment, I asked for clarification. If you were offended by the fact that I am willing to question something that is stated in BTVC book, I can't help that. I will continue to question things that just don't make sense to me. Most things are explained very well between the book and the web site. However, there are some items, like bifdus, that are not addressed very well at all - unless you are directed to the information. Thankfully, someone was willing to take the time to send me in the right direction to find what I was seeking; this gives me what I need to make up my own mind. I appreciate the community spirit that I have found here on this list, but I have to admit that I did not enjoy being taken to task for something that I did not do.
