Guest guest
Dearest Beth, I do not have an autistic child but I know a little bit about picky eaters and oh, what a pain in the petunias!!! I am not sure I havea ny advice for you that will help since my child is not autistic and I have UC. My one question...after all that throwing up, are you sure its not just a bug of some sort like the flu? For myself, when I have the flu and throw up a lot, after that's over, all I want is food that's bad for me. Its just a thought. Charlene UC 8 years SCD 5 1/2 years Hi Everyone, This is my second attempt at SCD. I tried back in February- long story. I'm committed to making it work this time--- Joey is 5. Diagnosed with autism at age 2. Diagnosed with nodular lymphoid hyperplasia( Dr. wakefield/MMR stuff) Had chronic yeast/bacterial overgrowth for almost 3 years. Joey's diet has been GFCF since age 2.6. This gave us initial improvements.......behaviorally- but gut never really improved. 4-6 loose muchy stools daily since forever. Here's the clincher......He is incredibly picky. Picky doens't even describe him actually. I can't beg or bargain with him to even try a new food that isn't visually appealing to him. Before I started SCD 6 days ago- Joey ate: nutbutter/fruit preserve sandwiches( on rice bread) pancakes, rice flour muffins, fries, chips, rice cakes...see a trend! Fruit! raw. grapes, raisens, apples, pears, oranges,BANANAS he did love ANDI bars. ( Special Diets for Special kids makes these rice protein bars.) he went through a raw pecan(smoked and salted)stage I think that's it. occasional chicken nuggets So I'll just break down the last week on scd for you starting with day 1. Day 1: Joey ate: I yellow banana. Tried one bite of chicken pancake- spit out when he realized it wasn't regular pancake. Ran screaming from mini hamburger patty. Drank lots of water. Gave charcoal and magnesium citrate. No poops all day. Went to sleep 6:30 pm- midnight woke sick. Throwing up off and on for about 7 hours. Day 2: Still had fever. Drank 2 glasses of dilluted grape juice- threw up immediately. Sofa bound all day. Fed him later in day small kids bowl of pureed/cooked pear sauce with 1/2 camomille capsule. had 2 epsom salt baths.HAd huge black/green poop very runny that night. Ate 2 tasty herb crackers before bed. Day 3: Joey slept through night! woke at 8 , immediately asked for juice. threw it up immediately.Sofa bound most of day. Two naps today.Fever remained. later in day finally got him to eat small amount of pear sauce. gave him charcoal capsule and mag citrate.had one epsom salt bath. slept through night. No poops. Day 4: Needed to be carried out of bed this morning. No energy. Drank small amounts of water on/off all morning. Offered scrambled egg/i tiny hamburger patty and tasty herb cracker- refused it all. Joey found ( don't know where) JIF simply. ( lower sugar JIF) gobbled a couple fists full before I could get to him. Later found an apple/raw/ gobbled it. Gave pear sauce to get him to take his chamomile capsule/charcoal and melatonin. Gave 1 spotty banana before bed- he was so excited to get that! He had a nasty runny black pooop late i day. DAY 5: Joey drank a little more dilluted juice than I would like today. 3 glasses. He ate and enjoyed banana/almond flour pancakes this morning. 2 bananas. Small amounts of pear sauce with his vitamin/mag citrate/melatonin and chamomile. Offered eggs/patty/veggies - ran away from them. Later that night ate and seemed to like eggless PB cookies.I offered fried carrots.....he refused. Got him to kiss.....got him to lick a few times . At this point he saw where I was hiding the bananas (linin closet) and I was saying carrot first- then banana. He tried so hard to eat it- just couldn't bring himself to do it. Licking was the best he could do. No banana at that point. He chewed up and spit out 4 chicken pancakes that evening. getting more mad with each. He thought they were those banana pancakes...... No poops today.Cranky and aggressive today. Day 6: Joey woke at 4 am this morning...despite wanting to stay up late night before( 8:45 pm) Had a big black poop early. Had another, yet smaller, poop around 8:30 am. He ate: 1 spotty banana 8-10 eggless pb cookies Tried and spit out violently the squach puree( I tried it too- yuck!) I made and offered carrot( with 1/4 cup chicken broth) sneaky veggie pancakes- REFUSED! Found- again...must have been in the back of fridge....jar of sunflower butter......ate that down. DAy 7: Big black runny poop in the a.m. Joey ate banana pancakes for breakfast ( lots) and the few that were left ate a couple hours later. PLus yellow banana. He did eat about 10 chicken nuggets( fried in FRY DADDY fryer) with safflower oil/salted. Offered cooked carrots....hamburger patty.....fried chicken bites without almond flour breading....all refused without even touching. I really feel frustrated......especially when I read all these newbies describing how their child is happily or even unhappily , but still eating the allowed foods. No doubt he needs this diet. And I'm not gonna be arrogant enough to say he's the pickiest kid ever.....but there isn't one food on the intro diet he would eat. Not one. He's got major sensory issues. Major. Never liked eggs/veggies/meats(except chicken nuggets) bless you for reading this very long post. I just wanted to lay all the info on the table so any who were kind enough to read might have the best chance of helping out with all the information. Thanks in advance......I'm desperate. Guest guest
Welcome back to the group Beth, > This is my second attempt at SCD. I tried back in February- long > story. These links may be helpful at expaining some of what he is going through (black, weird colored stools etc.) and there may be some helpful suggestions (picky eater ideas) http://pecanbread.com/difficulties.html#picky http://pecanbread.com/foodprep.html#transition http://pecanbread.com/difficulties.html#initial http://pecanbread.com/badreaction.html The fever, weird stools and vomiting etc. have been reported before by others who have gone through die off. You may have better luck if you forget about intro diet or even basic foods and just get him to eat anything that is legal. Once he is feeling a bit better (gets through the worst of the die off) you may be able to go back and do the intro (if needed at that point) or more basic foods once you find SCD foods that he will eat. There are some recipe ideas at http://pecanbread.com/foodprep.html#menu and lots of kid friendly recipes at http://pecanbread.com/recipes.html More SCD recipes at http://www.scdrecipe.com/recipes.html Sheila, SCD 2/01, UC 22yrs mom of and
Guest guest
Hi Beth; I'm also fairly new to SCD (2 months dairy-free). I empathize with your situation. My 2 yo daughter is also super picky. And yes, it is frustrating to read posts of others children eating stuff willingly from the beginning - but rest assured it's not all sunshine and lollipops for everyone! From what you've written, I think his appetite will improve once some gut healing takes place. He's really craving the carbs and sweets right now. Once that dies down he may be willing to try new things. My 2 yo still has some healing to do - still has bloated tummy and behaviour issues so I know she's still sick. Probably why she's still so picky. Just keep offering the SCD foods that you're making and one day he may take a bite or two and swallow instead of spit out (boy can I relate to this one!!) Hang in there - one day he'll be eating new things openly. Kim 2 months dairy free SCD for 3.5 yo and 2 yo
Guest guest
Dear Beth, How stressed you must be feeling. I am not sure that any of this will help, but although 's diet was not as restricted as your sons, he was still reluctant to try new things. It was a few weeks into the diet before he tried anything new and now I can't believe the range of foods that he will eat.But I did have to offer the foods on a few occasions before they were eaten. Do you think that these initial reactions were viral or die off?? If it was die off he must have been feeling terrible. I hope that he gets over this initial (rather big) hurdle and you flourish on the diet. Fingers crossed that in a few weeks you have a break through. Guest guest
give him fluids, he'll get hungry. when the body is in detox mode it might make him not want foods. try the broths and slowly introduce things. don't offer him food all day, wait until you see that he is ready for something. he is already 5, so he can read you too. if you are anxious about giving him the food, he won't want it. good luck. , mom to Fiol 19 mo, all family on SCD 1/
Guest guest
Hi Beth, I have had similar problems with my two year olds. What I did after we lost tons of weight from not eating was just find SCD legal foods they would eat. My worst of the two in terms of picky eating now will eat some pumpkin mush (egg, pumpkin, a little fruit for sweetness) but it took almost a month of giving it to his brother and offering to him before he would even touch it without a fit. He will eat pears and that is it right now. Sometimes guacamole (before when he was rejecting mush he would eat guacamole and pears and squash--now it is pears and the pumpkin thing), sometimes squash, sometimes chicken tots (well, once chicken tots). Anyway, what has been most helpful was act like none of it bothered me. It still does of course. But the facts are you can't make them eat. I also put some very finely pureed chicken in his drink for protein. I don't have advice really--just that since I started acting like I didn't care he has opened up a little in foods. I am doing enzymes too in hopes of making the healing go faster and hopefully then he will eat more variety. In the meanwhile, I just keep making it available. Anyway, no good advice. Just wanted you to know that you aren't alone... le
