Guest guest
Judy, Are you able to tolerate protein as in meat???????????? Like chicken, pork. I can't tolerate red meat. When I lost 50 pounds due to this illness, I could only tolerate Carbs. Then I slowly added protein and I have been able to keep the weight off and not loose any more. Stay away from sugars and excess carbs as they just breakdown to sugars in your body. Protein hangs around longer and you may be able to slowly gain some weight. Just a suggestion. Also try some type of Soy cereal. I eat this soy ceral called Soy and Oats from the health food store. made by Organic co. It is not bad at all, Crunchy, and looks like corn flakes. That kinda sticks to my ribs as they say and is still easy to digest. Also papaya juice and papaya tablets aid in digestion. been taking those for 2 years. Have they sent you to a dietician ? Lily RN from OHIO Weight I have a few questions regarding weight. I lost 12 lbs. in Nov. while in the hospital on an IV and NPO. Is there anyone out there who's having the same problem that I am or am I alone ? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Guest guest
Judy, Unfortunately, you are not alone with your weight loss problem. I am 5'-8 " , and weigh the same as you do! On a good day I may climb up to 112, but it never stays there. My normal weight used to be 128, but I have not seen that since October of '02. It all began with a 30 pound weight loss in the beginning stages of CP in 2001. Once I was diagnosed with CP and put on enzyme supplements, my weight very slowly climbed back up, from 110 to 128 during an 18 month period. At the end of '02 I got sick, lost weight and got down to 98 pounds in March when I was hospitalized with diabetic ketoacidosis. I've been trying to gain ever since then. Another hospitalization with an acute attack this past October caused me to slide down again. I wasn't able to be put on TPN because of the risk of infection. I have two pseudocysts that the doctors have been trying to protect from infection, as well as diabetes. Diabetics have to avoid infection at all costs, as they are more suseptable to serious complications from infections that are slow to heal. I'm taking enzyme supplements, antioxidants, and have tried Ensure and even Peptamen, which is a pre-digested medium chain triglyceride preparation designed to add weight. Unfortunately, I couldn't tolerate the Peptamen, but you may ask you doctor to let you give it a try. It is the same solution that they put into TPN or a j-tube for internal hospital or home feedings. The only difference is that this type comes in a can that you can special order through your pharmacy and you drink it like you would Ensure or one of the other supplemental drinks. It caused me to have nausea and additional cramping, but I'm told that my reaction was unusual. I've also just started taking additional fish oil capsules, 4 each day. Since I have put on 2 pounds since I started these, they may help, or it may just be a fluke. It's really too early to tell. My weight problems are caused by malabsorption and the fact that I have pancreas burnout now and just don't seem to be able to absorb anything. Since your fecal fat test came back normal, it appears that you don't have problems with malabsorption, yet. If you just lost your weight in November, it just may be that you are getting a slow start with weight gain. I remember when I first started back eating after my first hospitalized attack in '01, it took me over four months before I gained even the first pound. It may just be that it's going to take you a little longer. With hope and prayers, Heidi South Carolina SC & SE Regional Rep. PAI, Intl.
