Guest guest
There was a mom named last year who banded for 7 mm, and was quite pleased. I would say it isn't common, but it also depends on how your child's head looks. How old is Blake? Depending on age you may want to take a wait and see approach. 7mm doesn't look the same on every baby. You could try searching old messages if you don't get good replies. -christine sydney, 3 yrs, starband grad > > I'm asking this question becuase my son Blake was measured to have 7mm > plagio, but we were advised banding would offer little - if any - > improvement. Guest guest
Hi! I'm new to the group and haven't posted yet. Our 6 month old has been in his StarBand for just over a week now. When we started PT for his tort he was 10mm. In one month we got him down to 8mm but we couldn't get it any better than that. He stayed at 8mm for two months even though we were doing everything we could do so we decided to get the helmet. Our doc told us we should be able to get him down below 2mm. I think that catching them at the " right " age is probably the most critical part. I'm sorry I don't have any progress to report yet (except that he is doing well and doesn't mind wearing it), but just wanted to say IMO you should go for it. And maybe you might think about going to a different doc who will be more supportive of your decision? Good luck! in UT > > I'm asking this question becuase my son Blake was measured to have 7mm > plagio, but we were advised banding would offer little - if any - > improvement. Guest guest
Our son was 11mm when he started the Starband 6 weeks ago. At his second visit, he was down to 7mm, which looked much better but still would have bugged me. How noticeable it is of course depends on the child. Now that I have seen that in just a few more weeks we got down to 2mm I think if we'd started at 7mm, banding would have been the right thing to do. You didn't mention how old Blake was. If he's young and you don't go ahead with banding, be sure to reposition him so it doesn't get worse! > > I'm asking this question becuase my son Blake was measured to have 7mm > plagio, but we were advised banding would offer little - if any - > improvement. Guest guest
I suppose I should have mentioned Blake is 6 months old today. I started this process just after 4 months and finally got in to see the specialist last week. My pedi didn't see a problem so of course I had to take the time to wait for a specialist appt and now at 6 months old repositioning really doesn't work. I've wondered though, does repositioning allow the head to round out, or does it simply prevent further flattening???? > > > > I'm asking this question becuase my son Blake was measured to have 7mm > > plagio, but we were advised banding would offer little - if any - > > improvement. Guest guest
, I can't answer your question in general, but I can say that we did repo when was 4-6 months and I thought it made a tiny bit of difference. There was less of a sharp angle to the left side of his head, but it was still as asymmetrical. My impression is that repo mostly just kept the problem from getting worse. On the other hand, if you can do repo in a way so as to really apply a bit of pressure to the opposite (bulging) side of the head, it should work as a helmet does, though perhaps not so fast. So, theoretically it could work. And at least a few people on this board have had real success with it. What I don't know, though, is this: if you are at 7mm, say, and do enough repo to head off further asymmetry, then will the head maintain just 7mm of difference? By the time the child is older and his head is bigger 7mm will be a much smaller fraction of his head size and really won't show. Maybe one of the moderators knows this. Another question I have (and am going to post separately) is whether repo for plagio can cause brachy. I think that happened to us. If I were you and if my insurance would cover most of the cost, I'd push for a helmet. Then the whole problem will be gone in a few weeks. If money is involved, though, you had been think about that too. Good luck! > > I suppose I should have mentioned Blake is 6 months old today.
