LOVE & HUGS, grandmomBEV I don't know what to do I just don't know what to do. About a week ago I brought my daughter to the peditrician because she developed a very dry deep cough over night. He said it is bronchitis. He gave her antibiotics and increased her albuterol treatments to 4 times a day instead of 2. I called her cf clinic just to see if there was anything else we should do(this is the first time she has had any lung problems) they just said to change to a diffrent kind of antibiotics and do chest pt 3 times a day instead of 2. She is not done the medicine yet, but the cough seems worse. Is this normal? She seems to feel better but her cough just sound horrible. I just feel like I may be letting her get more sick, or am I just being paranoid and over protective. I brought her back to the ped. for a recheck and he was no help. He just said well she looks better (obvisously). And he listened to her chest and said it sounds harsh and to keep doing the albuterol 4 times a day. I would appreciate any advice or anything. Guest guest
I would feel more comfortable if she was seen by the CF clinic. Even if the recommended treatment doesn't change, you will have greater peace of mind. Good Luck, Gale > I just don't know what to do. Guest guest
If it was me I would: 1) do albuterol nebs and PT 4x a day. 2) get on the phone to CF clinic and ask to be seen. If it is a nasty bug it is better to get on the IV treatment in the hosp right away rather than let it go. Don't ask if you should be seen, tell them you want her to be seen. This is no game, it's her health don't let anyone play games with it. I hope she is feeling better soon. I don't know what to do I just don't know what to do. Guest guest
Theresa, I know the feeling. Very frustrating. You want them to say and do more to make your child feel better. I hope someone out there has a suggestion for when it comes to this point. But I'd say concentrate more on the CF doc when she's that bad and stay on the phone. Unfortunately, coughing is a part of CF (a big part). We never got use to it and still can't sleep when our daughter is coughing like that. Hope she feels better soon. I was suprized when her CF doc said it was okay for her to take some cough syrup prescribed by her regular doctor, it did seem to help a little with the cough, at least enough for her to get some rest. I thought someone with CF wasn't supose to take cough medicine, but they said it was okay - but that was just for her, maybe it was something different. Just maybe something to put out here for anyone else who may have an idea or to the doc. G. mom of sam 14 w/cf matty 11 and bobby 7 no CF I don't know what to do > I just don't know what to do. Guest guest
All I can say is our experience....most of the time, with all 3 of our CF kids, when they start appropriate treatment (oral or iv antibiotics, depending on situation), they seem to get worse for a few days, that is, they cough up stuff like crazy. Usually for the first 5 days of iv antibiotics, they would seem worse to someone who has not had alot of experience with dealing with CF lung stuff. When we asked about this, we were told that the meds were working and they were just bringing all the junk that had built up in the lungs up, and that is a good thing. At least, that is our experience. They aren't really getting worse....just bring up the nasty stuff. I can only say that we do not seek any advice from pediatricians, we always use the CF docs for any CF related issues....the pediatricians always seem to under or over treat or not have a clue what to do. Once, we had a pediatrician literally panic when Mallory had green pseudomonas goo (thick as gum) all in her ear and she demanded the ent see her right away, blah blah blah. We knew it was pseudo and could have saved ourselves the trouble by calling the CF docs and doing a tuneup, instead, we ended up having her ears drained by the ent (who said, gee, I can diagnose this just by the smell, but I will still send it for culture, and of course, as we already knew, it was pseudo...) so then we had a delay in treatment, then they were not able to place the picc (that was back before ports) and more delays because all her veins for ivs were blown, and her ears were a mess by the time we got her port almost a week later. After that, we decided that even ear stuff in the Cf kids to to the CF doc.... at least, thats our opinion, we start with them. Even the GI issues the CF docs can handle most of the time, at least at our clinic. Hope this helps. take care, Jen, m ommy of 7, 3 with CF ages 4, 5 and 7 (can you believe my baby is 4!!!!!!) > I just don't know what to do.
