Guest guest
Sharon, Congratulations on the new baby! When Levi was born, he had meconium ileus and did not require surgery to clear it. He was given enemas of what his doctor said was " a very slippery substance " and was x-rayed to see the progression of the blockage clearing itself. It worked and he was home by one week of age. That is very good news that your baby has had several bowel movements! That must mean that the treatment is working. Levi was not allowed to feed until the third or fourth day, just had i.v. fluid. When he was allowed a bottle, the amount was carefully monitored (no direct breast feeding was allowed, had to pump and measure the amount before he could have it.) When the x-rays showed the bowels were clear, he got to come home. Good luck with Jack! ~ > Our son, Jack was born (full term) on Monday. Guest guest
Congrats! My son Zach was born at 31 weeks with a meconium ileus. He had the enemas to clear his blockage and never required surgery. Make sure the docs are hydrating your son with iv fluids. The solution used in the enemas will draw water into the bowels to expel the blockage which can rapidly dehydrate a little baby. Hope all goes well. Guest guest
Hi Sharon, My son, who is now 19 months, had meconium ileus at birth. He was given a barium enema which luckily cleared the blockage without having to have further surgery. We were lucky. I was able to breast feed him when he was about 1 week old. I pumped about every 4 hours or so. That was hard, I think back now and don't know how I did it. I had an electric pump that we rented from the hospital which made it quicker. Hope this helps. Congratulations!! Cheryl Meconium Ileus Our son, Jack was born (full term) on Monday. We knew that he had CF because of his ultrasounds showed enlarged bowels and our daughter, Sophia, has cf. Guest guest
Sharon, Congratulations on your new little boy. I am sorry to hear that he has CF. My son Colgan had meconium Peritinitis at birth and surgery was unavoidable, but the fact that he is having bowel movements is very encouraging. The only thing that our surgeon did to ensure " poops " was to do enemas at least once a day to promote its flow. It seemed to work. I am sure that your doctor will do everything he can to avoid surgery. Having been through this I know that you are all very worried and do not want him to have to. If he does I hope that he heals rapidly and with no problems so that you can get your little one home where you can all relax and love eachother in peace. Love to you all Ashauna mom of 2 boys Maxwel almost 5 still testing and Colgan 7 months wcf
Guest guest
Cheryl, I did the same thing every four hours and then feeding and then cleaning up and then pumping again. OMG I really hated it. I knew that it was good for Colgan but I really hated hooking myself up to that evil b**b sucking machine. It quickly became quite a laugh for my husband. He knew I dreaded it everytime. I felt like all I did was pump - feed - pump- feed. Isn't it funny the things that you will do to make sure your children get the best all the gripeing included. Guest guest
I hated it too. I always said " I'm going to hook myself up to the Hoover " . I couldn't have breastfed without it though.
