Hi Dora,

When I read your post my heart went out to you. We have a 5 yr old

that I am sure if diagnosed it would be bipolar with who knows what

else. We started SCD on the 15th of Jan and have seen amazing

results. He didn't have any digestive problems either that we could

see. Most days it was like there was a switch in him that would get

flipped for no apparent reason and he would go into a rage, kicking,

screaming, biting, throughing things, clearing the counter, table the

list just keeps going on. If someone would ask him to do something

it would be impossible to get him to do it. If you asked him to

stop you would have to physically restrain him to keep him from

continuing. And yet there were times that he was the sweetest

little guy possible.

When we started SCD our Neurodevelopementalist told me that we would

know within 3 weeks if this was the right track. I talked to my

husband and adult son who lives with us and got them to agree to try

it for the 3 weeks. I packed up everything that was illegal and we

carried it into a room in a separet basement in our house to store.

The freezer/ fridge stuff I had my oldest daughter take it to her

house and store until we knew if we were going to continue.

We knew within a week that we would be doing this for quite awhile.

He started to change so quickly.

We were at the point that if we didn't find something to work we

were going to have to start finding a medication for him and

everything in me screamed against this.

If you can get your husband to agree how important it is for your

sons to have a really good start with this and possibly give him the

3(I have heard some say 4)week trial. Then find a place you can put

all the extras that are not scd legal, possibly a friend or relative

would be willing to store it for you temperarialy(once we decided we

just gave most of it away.)

It is VERY important for you to have a good test for them to not

have any illegals. An illegal for our son, even a very small amount

(like one M & M) will send us into a day that is not fun.

Your husband could even have illegals in his diet when not in the

house like at work. It has been helpful though for our two kids to

know that mom and dad AND big brother are all doing this with them.

That we want healthy tummies also. If your husband can't or won't

do this ask him have the illegals out side of your home and not in

front of the boys.

I hope this has helped you.

Sandy M.

Dear Doran, Congratulations on wanting to do this as a family! Your family

sounds like ours in many ways! This is what we decided to do because we

considered it medical necessity. Everyone of us could have been put in Elaine

Gottschalls book! LOL! We are four months out and truly doing better than

expected. Some think we are a little " nutso " for doing this with " fanatical

adherence " but this is exactly what Elaine suggested. IT is Ok what others

think, because the truth is we have never been a more calm and happy family. I

am much happier. I have a history of Bi-polar and depression and was recently

diagnosed with celiac disease. I truly think I was misdiagnosed now, so does my

new doctor. He understand the brain gut connection. To think of all those

years wasted taking meds (I too gained much weight on them). I warn you the

withdrawl from being a carb junky is not fun, but by the end of the first month

with no infractions, this too does pass. Food has never tasted better. We are

truly SCD keepers...gfcfsf did not work this well. I am currently

psychologically fine and taking no meds, and healing more and more each month.

Good Luck, Antoinette and and three kids (family problems: ADD, ADHD,

Autism, mental illness, malabsorption, celiac disease, rages, tantrums and

hyperkplexia) 2/06

Ahhh.... what a concept, indeed! What is hubby willing to do to help your son?

Make a little tiny sacrifice when it comes to what foods he consumes when at

home?.... I hope! The payoff would be HUGE, as it's obvious from what you

describe that something is " not right " in your son's gut! This can SO affect his

brain chemistry. SCD is definitely worth a try, but it will no doubt be a rocky

start... and you need your husband fully on board. He can eat whatever he wants

on his own.... away from home! I hope you can convince him to help you with full

compliance.... you will be SO happy you did this!
