Guest guest
It is a pleasure to announce that Florida-based farmworker and community advocate Ana Bolaños has been named as the recipient of the Florida Governor's Point of Light Award in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month for her exemplary service to her community. This is a state-wide award recognizing volunteerism. We are excited that Ana has been recognized for her 10 years of dedication to the farmworker communities in Volusia and Putnam counties. As President and founder of the /Alianza de Mujeres Activas/ (AMA), Ana has been committed to linking her community to existing services, offering health education and to supporting victims of domestic violence. Many of you will remember Ana from her presentations at the Migrant Stream Forums in Seattle, Memphis and Savannah in the last 8 years. She has been a collaborator with the Rural Women's Health Project on countless local, state and regional grant projects, including the Creando Nuestra Salud- Early Breast Cancer Detection which was an AMA initiative. As stated in the Points of Light news release, "Ana has continued to be a generous role model for the Hispanic community since moving to the United States with her family... Recognizing a lack of programs for her Hispanic coworkers shortly after arriving in the United States, Ana began educating farm workers about their rights and protecting their health. She also helped families displaced during the 2004 hurricane season by organizing the delivery of food and water."
