Guest guest
Hi all, I second this . One time I told my doctor I just hurt too much to go for a walk and he looked me in the eye and said " You gotta do it kid " . So, when ever I don't feel like going for a walk I just remember what he said and I go out the door. A person needs to start slowly and before you know it you will increase your stamina and it gets addictive. I hate it when the weather is cold or raining and I can't go, but I always get back to it when I can. It's so good for a person both emotionally and physically. As for diet, I pretty much eat what I want, try to fix good meals, but I do have a problem with sweets. Gotta have those peanut butter cookies! LOL. That was for Heidi. Love, Marilyn > I think I may have heard you all groan whenever I have mentioned how important I think exercise/diet are. But exercising in some way as a group might be a fun way to get started and keep each other motivated. You know, if you tell yourself, " I'm going to walk for 1 minute 3 days in a row, and then 2 minutes the next 3 days, you've just started a progressive exercise program. If walking is not your thing, you can grab a can of soup and lift it 5 times per arm for 3 days, and build up from there. Since everyone starts at a different fitness level, your own doctor - when asked - can give you a list of exercises that take into consideration your physical limitations. > > I went to our hospital's Cardio-Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center and asked them for a copy of their warm-up and cool-down stretches. These are for people who are starting from scratch after major surgery. If your breathing is compromised (like mine) they can also give you a little sheet describing 'pursed lip breathing'. > > The benefits are many, but for me exercise is one part of my life that I can control. With different doctors telling me what to do, what pills to choke down, get this scanned, have that x-ray'd, I started feeling like they had taken charge of my life. But exercising has taken the place of my job and is something I have to work at. I'm my own personal trainer. The payoff is that my musculo-skeletal system is staying in shape so that when the RP cure comes along to repair my cartilege, I'm going to be ready. > > If we begin something as a group and are accountable to each other, we might just stay with it and provide support when we can't exercise and have to start over again. > > Your thoughts/comments? > > --
Guest guest
Okay, Marilyn, that's 2 of us and that's a start. There are days when I want to say, " I just can't " and I need the " pointed-toe shoe lady " to kick me in the butt (you know who you are and I need you). My RP friends, the RP and/or Wegener's hit me hard and fast. My medical documentation refers to my case as 'complex, deteriorating status' with 'poor prognosis'. I've never, ever been able to say those words aloud (denial?). I look around at my family whom I love so very much and want to cry. But then I get mad and start stomping around like a crazy woman. Well, that's how I got started, and I'm now on my 3rd pair of walking shoes and 3 miles a day. It's the only way I know to fight back. The medical world has not encouraged me to exercise and I find this disappointing! .. At first I took this to mean that maybe they felt it wasn't worth the effort. But I feel it is, and if not then I'll --- trying. And Marilyn's right: it is addictive. It also curbs my appetite and I don't feel hungry for hours. Blah, blah, blah...I've blabbed too much-sorry. Have a Happy Valentine's Day as you are all sweethearts to me. --
