All the Houston enzymes (including Zyme-Prime) are made using

Asergillus, which I believe is a mold. My son is highly allergic

(including to mold) and we were advised to avoid aspergillus.

Alternative types of enzymes that are naturally-derived are from

papain (papaya) and bromelain (another fruit, maybe kiwi or

pineapple, I'm not sure). There are many pork-based enzymes on the

market, and Allergy Research Group makes some lamb-, beef-, and pork-

derived pancreatic enzymes with no other ingredients. Unfortunately,

although my son tolerated these, they didn't seem to have any effect

even at high dose. They are pure animal pancreas product and don't

contain lactose. I am sure there must be pancreatic enzymes on the

market that don't have lactose, but you may need to search. Lactose

is often a filler or binding sugar used in pills but is not necessary

to the formulation. Try looking for enzymes that come in capsules or

powders. If all else fails, talk to a good compounding pharmacist

about making a lactose-free enzyme formulation for you.
