Guest guest
Dear Post-ops: The patient manual states the following: -------------------------------------------------------------------- WARNING: Stop Taking Any Aspirin, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen, Advil or Other Arthritis or Pain Medicines Make certain you do not take any aspirin or aspirin containing medicines for two weeks before surgery because this can increase your risk of bleeding. Aspirin and the other salicylates belong to a group of drugs called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (or NSAIDs for short). You should avoid anti-inflammatory agents such as Ibuprofen (Advil) and aspirin products as well as excessive quantities of Vitamin E (the small amount contained in most multi-vitamin preparations is not harmful) for two weeks before surgery, as these inhibit the clotting mechanism and increase your chances of unnecessary operative bleeding. Aspirin-like products, which interfere with blood clotting, can promote bleeding during and after your surgery. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Does that also include Tylenol products as well, whether it's for sinus, headache, or whatever? Or just the stuff that are aspirin- like because it can cause ulcers? If that's the case, what can you take...anything for pain or sinus two weeks pre-op? What about post- op? Does he say anything about what pain meds can be taken? I've searched throughout the manual, but couldn't find anything on addressing specific types of pain meds? If anyone has a follow-up to this question (which I'm sure was asked somewhere along the way) I'd be very grateful to know. Marsha
Guest guest
You can't take aspirin and aspirin-like products before surgery, period, because of the bleeding problems -- that list now includes Vioxx. You can't take Tylenol *after* surgery because of the damage it does to the liver. I'm not sure if you can take Tylenol before surgery or not -- better ask the boss. Guest guest
Not that I'm an authority on any of this, but the aspirin thing has to do with bleeding. Aspirin thins the blood. As far as after surgery, all pain meds have to be prescription. Rosemary Question about pre-op and post-op pain meds?? > Dear Post-ops: > > The patient manual states the following: > -------------------------------------------------------------------- > WARNING: Stop Taking Any Aspirin, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen, Advil > or Other Arthritis or Pain Medicines > > Make certain you do not take any aspirin or aspirin containing > medicines for two weeks before surgery because this can increase your > risk of bleeding.
