Guest guest
Becky, Excuse me for butting in, but I wanted to respond to your post to Chrystal about your husband's insulin requirements. If he is consistantly running blood glucose levels of 255 or thereabouts, he definetely needs to be taking a higher dose of insulin! Is he seeing an endocrinologist, and has he had consultation with a diabetic nurse educator? Both of these professionals are essential to his treatment as a diabetic, and should be able to recommend correct insulin requirements that will help him get his BG's under better control. Serious complications can set in with a prolonged history of daily BG levels that high. I have been a type 1 brittle diabetic ever since a diabetic ketoacidosis attack 10 months ago. I also have CP and had pancreas burnout last year. I use Lantus insulin for a baseline insulin and fast acting Humalog is taken with all meals. My daily baseline insulin amount is 12 units of Lantus, and I use about 24-26 units of Humalog daily. This dosing enables me to keep my blood sugar levels at 95-104 on a daily basis, with an HBA1c of 5.5%. If your husband isn't getting a fasting glucose level of about 100, this is what he should be aiming for, and you need to find an endocrinologist that will get him on the right dosing schedule so that he can attain these levels. With the right diet that is low on carbohydrates and the right insulin dosages, these levels are possible. For the future health of your husband, it is paramount that he get some professional medical help that will help him to get his blood glucose under better control. My husband lost 70% of his pancreas in September. Before the surgery he was not diabetic. Since then he is on insulin. His blood sugar is still high even on insulin. his sugar is still staying at about 255 all the time.
