Guest guest
Everytime I hear about the Atkins diet, I think about all the damage these folks are doing to themselves. Is there any way that the Pancreatitis association can take a stand against this fad? Rick
Guest guest
I agree with you Rick. There are a lot of people in the office I work at that are on it. How could eating all that meat and other greasy foods actually help you loose weight. Do they forget about high cholesterol. What happened to low fat diet and daily exercise. I just think alot of these people are lazy and want a quick fix for losing weight. Guest guest
Everybody wants it to be easy, but the problem here is that this is presented as a healthy option when it is clearly not. Some major press needs to go out about the health dangers of doing this. Rick > I agree with you Rick. There are a lot of people in the office I work at that are on it. Guest guest
IMHO, EVERY diet has it's good and bad points. I personally think the best diet for almost everyone is a well balanced diet that contains conservative portions of each of the major food groups....with the emphasis on " conservative " . Fact is, many people don't know that much about proper nutrition and don't care enough to learn, so they overeat too much of the wrong foods and then think that only the latest fad " diet " can fix them. If they took the time to learn good nutrition and accustomed themselves to a way of eating that encompassed the major food groups in reasonable portions, they wouldn't have to " diet " in the first place. Those people that have particular health concerns naturally are advised to follow diets that are stream lined to meet the needs of their health condition. Those of us with CP find that the low fat, low protein, high carb diet works the best for us. Many people feel the Atkins diet is THE BEST diet for diabetes, since it's high in fats and proteins and low in carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are what causes the highest and longest rise in blood glucose, so a diabetic needs to avoid those as much as possible. A person with both CP and Diabetes finds themself straddling the diet fence trying to please both!! My sister is healthy, yet overweight, until she became an Atkins convert and lost 30 pounds. When she heard I had become diabetic a year ago, she kindly sent me four of Atkins cookbooks!!! She meant well, certainly, but forgot that my chronic pancreatitis prohibited that heavy a load of fats and proteins. So I'm afraid that no matter what we think, and what is good for CPer's, you aren't going to convince a lot of people that the Atkins diet is wrong for them. Most diabetics love it, and a lot of people that want quick weight loss do, too! I wouldn't worry about it, most people won't stick with it for any great length of time. IMO, they'll get tired of it, missing their breads, rice and pastas, and then they'll fall back on the bad eating habits they had originally that were the reason they went on Atkins to start with, until the NEXT " fad " diet comes along.(smile) With love, hope and prayers, Heidi Heidi H.
