Correction is completely dependent on growth, and you'll see faster correction with an active band than you will a passive one. If there was growth present, but absolutely no correction, I think looking into other options isn't a bad idea as the current helmet doesn't seem to be working. Between 7 and 8 months of age our daughter saw only ~1/8 inch (~3mm) of total growth in her head circumference and yet there was still progress in her head shape. It was slight, but it was there. Perhaps someone here has/had experience with that particular brand? Searching through old posts may dig up something useful.

I would like to say that this is just my opinion and I am obviously not a doctor (although I play one at home....), but I would assume that after 4 weeks of consistent wearing you should have seen a difference, however 9mm is considered on the high end of mild by most standards and the more mild the case the more difficult it is to make a difference. That being said I would not hesitate to ask your provider what their expectations and timeline are for the band. If you are still not comforatable with the results, go with your gut and get a second opinion. Hope this is helpful and good luck!

Cinde,

What kind of helmet is it? Does it have foam in it or is it clear like a passive helmet. I am asking because my daughter was in a passive helmet before and despite growth both her plagio and brachy got worse.

In my opinion, if your son's head grew it should have grown in the right direction and 0mm improvement doesn't add up in my mind.

Also, my daughter got in her DOC band at 9.5 months old and within two months her 8mm plagio went down to 2.1mm.

He is currently in a locally-made helmet. From pictures I've seen, it looks like it's very similar to a STAR band ... same shape, same Velcro closure on the side, same cut out for ventilation on the top. We don't have a CT or America in our area.

I've made an appointment for a consultation at another local orthotics company for a second opinion this Wednesday. They typically use STAR bands and I believe they also have a scanner, so I'll be curious to hear what their opinion of the situation is. I didn't know about them until after we had the first helmet made. Unfortunately, if we decide to go a different direction and do a second helmet, we'll have to pay out of pocket. Our insurance paid for the first one. I would be fine doing this, however my husband will really need to be convinced that there is a SIGNIFICANT difference in what the 2nd helmet will do that is different than the first. Especially since they appear to be otherwise identical.
