The other thing to consider is the state of said immune system...if you've an immunocompromised person on your hands (as many here do) they are not on a level playing field to start with. If the infection is bad enough to warrent an abx script, best to catch it early, follow the protocol and finish the round (even if symptoms improve before you're thru). And imo, whether or not it is swallowed or absorbed or whatever, best to really push great nutrition and some probiotics during. JMO.
