Guest guest
Welcome , I assume you mean that he's addicted to commercial almond milk? None of the commercially prepared nut milks are legal... they all have some sort of sweetener and/or thickener. So, if you allow him any once he's on SCD, it's not going to be " his " almond milk anyway, & he might not be so keen on the homemade. We would definitely recommend following the SCD intro diet for a couple of days first, though... and almond milk would is not included on that. Generally, the recommendation is that nut milks should be started later, but I think Elaine's thinking on this was that she discouraged people drinking a LOT of it before some gut healing has taken place. I know we came to this same question regarding homemade coconut milk recently... and an old post was found from Elaine saying that she understood the kids needed a replacement for the milks they were used to drinking... and that it would be okay. Do you think he might accept homemade coconut milk? Might be easier to digest... and has healthy fat to help get those calories in. Any of these homemade milks are going to taste very different from what he's used to. Do you think he won't accept the legal juices? Check www.pecanbread.com under the " Supplements " link for some recommendations on probiotic supplements. That list does not include all the legal supplements that exist... but it also gives you a list of legal and illegal supplement additives, so you can check labels yourself. Acidophilus only is what's advised... with the possible exception of s.boulardii which some parents like to use as well. Those are the only two strains you should supplement to stay SCD legal. You can continue his enzymes, as long as there are no illegals in the enzymes themselves. Patti Starting SCD next week Hello all. I joined this group a few days ago and have been watching the posts go back and forth and although I am still a touch confused I am glad to see all this much information in one place. My son is 4 with ASD and he has been GFCF for over a year. However, we have decided to try SCD for at least 3 months to see what benefits come out of it. Our main reason is because he has been GFCF so long and he still has gut issues such as constipation; runny, frothy bm's, gas, and serious bloating. He is also only about 32-33 lbs and I hoping this will help him put on some weight. I have just a few questions before we get started. Mainly, since we are CF (the hopes would be to eventually begin dairy products) he is addicted to almond milk. Should I be using this right away, it seems the nut products are an issue in the beginning stages. Two, which CF probiotics are SCD-legal? Third, should I continue with his same enzyme routine? Thanks in advance,
Guest guest
Patti, Thank you for the tips. I think my son will have no problem with the intro diet because he is a juice, soup and scrambled egg fan. I knew that the commercial almond milks were a no go, and that is what he is addicted to. I don't believe though that he will miss it if only for a couple of weeks. I might give the homemade coconut milk a try, and if thats a no then I will just have to limit the amount of homemade almond milk. He has never been especially casein sensitive, I wonder if perhaps I should try the yogurt with the goats milk? Or do you think after a year of CF that that would be a bad idea? Thanks,
Guest guest
I think starting SCD goat yogurt is a wonderful idea. If he can tolerate it now, by all means, go ahead! It's got such wonderfully magical healing properties! best wishes, ... Patti Re: Starting SCD next week Patti, Thank you for the tips.
