Guest guest
I am wondering what type of yogurt to try for my son and I. We are both pretty severely lactose intolerant. I don't know if we are actually ALLERGIC to milk (is there a difference?). I for sure cannot tolerate goat's milk (if it's raw). If I cannot tolerate it raw, does that mean I won't be able to tolerate it in yogurt?? We could always try nut yogurt, but I am not able to do any nuts. If I'm intolerant to nuts, does that mean that the nut milk will bother me also? I feel like the intolerance is due more to fiber than anything else. Any suggestions on which type of yogurt we should try first? Thanks for any suggestions, ~ Celiac Son and I will start diet around the second week of August (I'm so excited!) _________________________________________________________________ Is your PC infected? Guest guest
When you make SCD yogurt, the beneficial bacteria consume all the lactose in the milk during the 24 fermentation process. So... if it's the lactose that you react to, you should be able to tolerate SCD yogurt. If you have problems with the actual milk protein (casein), the fermentation process also does make it *easier* to digest, but you *may* still not tolerate it. Of course, you should never eat any food that you have an anaphylactic allergy to. If you are allergic to nuts, you should not do nut yogurt. Goat yogurt is generally tolerated better by the ASD kids that have problems with cow dairy. If you know you react more to goat milk than to cow, it seems like cow might be a better one to try. It makes a nicer, thicker yogurt, too. We always suggest starting with an extremely small amount, observe how you do with it, and increase slowly. Yogurt is powerful stuff.... but oh-so-healing. The protein molecule in goats milk didders from cow's milk and is usually more digestible. Carol F. Guest guest
Patti, No, I'm not allergic to nuts....they just bother the tummy. I'm nearly positive it's the fiber, but I suppose it could be something more. That's why I was wondering if nut MILK would bother me. ? And how exactly do you tell whether you're casein intolerant, or if it's a dairy intolerance? I understand that if it's dairy that bothers me, then I can go ahead with the cow yogurt. If casein bothers me, then I suppose I'd try the goat yogurt. In fact, that's probably what I'll do, just to be safe. Then maybe try and " graduate " to cow yogurt. I love the taste of it....but boy do I react to it (of course, I'm not totally SCD, so that may be why).. Thanks for talking it out with me. :-) ~ Celiac >When you make SCD yogurt, the beneficial bacteria consume all the lactose >in the milk during the 24 fermentation process. Guest guest
Thanks, Carol. I think I'll try the goat yogurt, just in case. ~ > > > I am wondering what type of yogurt to try for my son and I. If you tried a small amount and did okay, you could work up from there and see how your tummy feels. <<And how exactly do you tell whether you're casein intolerant, or if it's a dairy intolerance? I understand that if it's dairy that bothers me, then I can go ahead with the cow yogurt. If casein bothers me, then I suppose I'd try the goat yogurt.>> Okay.... well, just going on memory, I think I remember you saying that you were " lactose intolerant " ... so I guess I assumed you knew it was the lactose. Lactose is the milk SUGAR... which bothers a lot of people. SCD yogurt is basically lactose-free... so it likely would not give you problems if that's the case. It's different, for example, for the kids who have severe " leaky gut " syndrome.... because they are actually having an allergic type reaction to the milk PROTEIN (casein). Many of those kids can tolerate yogurt made from goat milk, simply because they have not been previously exposed to the goat casein, so their bodies don't respond as if it were a threat. I honestly don't know how you tell whether you're reacting to lactose (milk sugar) or casein (milk protein). I was just assuming you knew it was the lactose. A friend of mine who is lactose intolerant (she is not on SCD) gets almost immediate stomach aches from ingesting even a small amount of regular milk, cheese or ice cream, etc....followed by diarrhea a couple of hours later. I gave her a bowl of my SCD cow-milk yogurt and she had ZERO tummy symptoms. You should probably proceed at whatever pace you feel comfortable with. Just know that the milk-based SCD yogurt does have healing qualities that go beyond what nut-milk yogurts can offer. Nut yogurt is basically just a way of " growing " more probiotics... it's a medium for cultivating them... and eating the nut yogurt is just a delivery system for those probiotics. It does have other good nutrients, too. Milk-based yogurt (cow or goat) seems to have other gut-healing qualities above and beyond that.
