Guest guest
Hi, I'm new here and have some questions about amylase counts. My step father's count was 1,400 the day he was admitted to the hospital. They put him on only enough water(by mouth) to take his meds and gave him fluids via IV. His count came down to the 700's at which time he was put on clear liquids, then any liquids and now on solid food. His count went back up again(not sure of the exact # this time). He's been released from the hospital and told not to eat greasy or fried foods. The 1st thing he ate after release was a double hamburger from 's. He's been in and out of the hospital for this acute abdominal pain(which we found out was pancreatitis) several times when the pain is unbearable. They put him on morphine (then changed the meds 'cause the morphine made him halluciate something terrible). He has been through chemo and radiation treatments for esophogial cancer in the last couple of months. For MANY years he was an alcoholic and has been sober for about 20yrs. I'm trying to help my mom figure out if the amylase count is something she needs to worry about or just " let it ride " , deal w/the cancer issues and enjoy what time they have left together... I appreciate ANY input you can give me so I can help my mom!! Blessings, Ginny
Guest guest
What did the physician say your fathers diagnosis was? Did they indicate any form of pancreatic cancer or tumor obstructing his common bile ducts? What are they doing to try and find the cause of the pancreatitis? It might be a wise decision to go the Dr. with him if that is agreeable with him. What you decribed with the Morphine is not an usual circumstance I have seen it before, it is called a sensitivity. Believe me he will eventually learn that hamburgers and french fries will equal pain, once he gets tried of hurting all the time. I believe the first priority would be to find out where the pancreatitis is coming from, unless from what you wrote they are sure it is post alcoholic pancreatitis.
