Guest guest
Antoinette, sugar alcohols of any kind are completely indigestable. Great fodder for those bugs Charlene Dear list mates and moderators, On page 62 Elaine says that we can occasionaly have low calorie diet chewing gum or candy if it contains soribitol and Xlitol. Also saying that excessive use of these products can cause diarrhea and bloating (ie fermentaion!) Does anyone know what kind this would be? Because I have been looking around and all of them that are sweetened in this way. So far all have added starch and xanthan gum and God knows what else, which would make it illegal. OTHERWISE, Does anyone have a recipe for gum? Can't find one. How do these ingredients look? They have spearmint and peppermint. Guess we'd still have to check on the " flavor extract " . Guest guest
Flavor extract is suspicious. There is no safe amount of flavor chemicals or enhancers for some people... julie46250 wrote: > > Dear list mates and moderators, > > On page 62 Elaine says that we can occasionaly have low calorie diet > chewing gum or candy if it contains soribitol and Xlitol. Guest guest
If anyone tries this gum, please let me know. I would love to have gum for my son. Thanks Sue 6 yr old son, SCD 3 months, no more learning issues.
Guest guest
Xylitol is probably your best bet, although it can be made from 2 different substances - birch and corn. The birch is more expensive, but most likely the better option, esp since most people on this list probably have a problem with corn. Check with the mfg if you can to find out the origin of the xylitol. Sue > > If anyone tries this gum, please let me know. Guest guest
Dearest Sue, Thank you for warning me that Sorbitol and Xylitol could be derived by corn~ I keep on forgetting about this little problem. We learned it a while ago when we learned by Carol F that " citric acid " in the canned pineapple and others things, could be derived by corn. We are not going to be doing this experiment any day soon. Don't trust the corn problem is gone yet. Back to scratch and keeping it simple and safe. posted this: " How do these ingredients look? XYLIPRO Xylitol Gum Ingredients: Xylitol, gum base, flavor extract, gum arabic, soy lecithin, glycerin, beeswax, carnaubawax http://www.xylipro.com/index.html<http://www.xylipro.com/index.html> From Elaine's Legal and Illegal list I never could find out if these where legal or not: " gum base " , " flavor extract " (with God knows what in it), " gum arabic " , " beeswax " , or " carnaubawax " .....none of them on the list. What was on Elaine's Legal and Illegal list is that: " ALL GUMS ARE ILLEGAL " . Even though her book said occasionally sorbitol and xylitol gum is OK to use, I guess Elaine at sometime changed that ALL gum could not be used any more. Probably because of other strange things that are illegal in ingredients. http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/legal/legal_illegal_d-n.htm<http://www.b\ reakingtheviciouscycle.info/legal/legal_illegal_d-n.htm> In situations like these: WHEN IN DOUBT GO WITHOUT! This is exactly what we are going to do. Sue, my son too, is not going to be happy. But better than being sick. We will make Elaine's honey lollipops today instead! Better safe than sorry, Antoinette (celiac) mom to -5 (celiac/once adhd/rages) SCD 2/
Guest guest
When Elaine said sugar free gum, she said occasionally. I tried an Eda sugarless hard candy which I used to eat before SCD and spit it out. It had a terrible artificial taste compared to SCD sweets. Personally I would not encourage gum chewing. It is unpleasant to watch, I don't tolerate the odor myself, and it lands in unexpected places from time to time, ruining things. > Xylitol is probably your best bet, although it can be made from 2 > different substances - birch and corn. Guest guest
Someone would have to write (as in snail mail) to the company and get details on company letterhead about what is in the " flavor extracts " . BTVC says a diet gum can be used occasionally, but ingredients in gum have probably changed since then. I know the common ones in the supermarket are full of illegals.
