OT--phenols?

I have found a section of a page on pecanbread.com that is headed, " Child Is

Sensitive To Phenols " . This is at: http://pecanbread.com/difficulties.html

It goes on, in the prose that follows to seemingly make some connection

between salicylates (and the Feingold program) and phenols. I have been

involved with the Feingold Association Of The United States for over 4 years,

and I am fairly certain that none of the basic info on how to follow the program

educates you on phenols or advises that you need to reduce or eliminate phenols;

they don't ever mention the word " phenol " .

There is some discussion on the Feingold message board of alternative ideas

that some families decide to try and find helpful, but it is always marked as

off-topic; it may have been discussed their at some point in time with the " OT "

notation.

The basic Feingold program does include a little bit of info on some " extra "

things that some families decide to avoid. That list includes: benzoates

(sodium benzoate, benzoic acid, etc.); corn syrup (or other corn sweetener);

MSG/HVP; nitrates/nitrites; calcium propionate; and sulfiting agents.

I've looked up phenols in a book I have, but have not made any progress in

figuring out what phenols are. The book said that phenol means " obtained from

coal tar " , which would equate that word with some aspects of the Feingold

program. But the pecan bread website linked it to the salicylates, which are

naturally occurring compounds and not related to coal tar. And others that have

mentioned it here on the list have linked it to other natural foods, like

grapes.

I do not really know anything about phenols and am trying to educate myself.

To figure out if the word phenol is meant as a synonym for salicylates on the

pecan bread web site or what. I am pretty sure that it is not truly a synonym,

but from what is written on the website is is very unclear what is meant or what

connections might legitimately exist.

I would really appreciate it if any of you who have a firm grasp on the topic

can write in and educate me about what is true and not true about " phenols " .

I'm guessing that it is correct to label this " OT " but also OK to discuss it

since the website mentions it as a possible issue for some families. Anyone

else who is new to SCD and reading this, please don't get confused. This is not

a central part of SCD. I imagine that it is referenced on the website so that

people who have given SCD a substantial trial and are getting results, but not

enough can continue their search for improving their diet and health. (So this

would come after a person has a thorough understanding of how to continue on

with SCD.)

Thanks in advance!
