Guest guest
Dear SCD Pals that have wisdom in this area. I have lost much muscle tone thanks to celiac disease...very weak legs, arms, and have lost most my buttocks. Most would think this is good...but not in this case. My daughter is hypotonic (low muscle tone) thanks to celiac disease. We where to sick before to care about exercise....let alone our muscle tone. When is it suggested that KikI and me can exercise and her case participate in physical therapy. As many already know this May 21 we where 4 months out. Do we need to heal more, or is it time to get those muscles moving? We are now gaining weight...an no longer loosing. Do we wait? Or get on the move? Thanks for suggestions, Sincerely, Antoinette/celiac and KiKi -2 celiac/autistic
Guest guest
Exercise is as essential to healing as diet, as fresh air, as sunlight. Something like yoga or tai chi is great for building some muscle tone and stamina in a very gentle way. I use yoga for PT and OT, my children do not realize this, they think it is only fun. It helps with functioning on many levels, from calming the nervous system to coming " online " . Sleep is better too. Summer Bunce wrote: Dear SCD Pals that have wisdom in this area. Yet, what is your opinion (or the opinion of others) on how long we should heal first before exercising? I would hate for us to loose more weight through exercise. We walk to the park..go to pool and play in the sun much. KiKI is naturally more active. AT first we couldn't get her to " walk " anywhere...she cried to be carried. Now she gets made when we carry here! I don't want to loose weight though....has anybody been in this predicament???? Guest guest
Don't you read any of my posts? lol Has anyone been in this predicament.....yes. I always had to carry Ben around too. A book I like is " Fly Like A Butterfly, Yoga For Children " by Shakta Kaur Khalsa. Wai Lana has a series of gentle yoga for beginners and yoga for children. WIth yoga, you never do more than feels comfortable, you are not supposed to " exert " yourself, you stop when tired or if you feel pain, pick up again later. Start with the gentle stretching, and as your flexibility and stamina go up, you in can increase resistance, if so desired, move onto harder poses. Yoga can be the worlds most gentle exercise, or the worlds more strenuous, you want to stay with the gentle stretching and gently work up. Very good for cardiovascular system, learning how to breathe from the diaphram, relax the nervous system, all these things translate to better fine motor coodordination over time. Yoga gently massages the internal organs. You shouldn't lose weight, but gently increase strength. Yoga is not like jogging, although I have seen some versions of it that looks like jogging. I would go with some of the above resources. Summer Bunce wrote: Summer said: Exercise is as essential to healing as diet, as fresh air, as sunlight. Guest guest
Thank you Summer and Carol both! I was working on my purple belt in Karate, prior to my first pregnancy. Several babies and health problems later, it truly upsets me to look at my body now. I am sure other mom's can relate. I will take it slow and not weight lift! lol! My neighbor this morning gave me a intro palates video. Will go to the library to check out the book " Fly Like A Butterfly " for KiKi, I will try this first before I start mountain climbing...or working on my black belt lol....not! Those days are over. CAROL, you weight lifted? Or is this a joke?? Antoinette/celiac and entire family of 5 SCD 2/06/celaic, add, adhd, autism and more

As you know I have osteoporosis too...and would love to get stronger. Pilates is a start...but would be nice to do more some day. Guest guest
This is good advice, Antoinette. A little exercise is always such a great psychological boost too - even when it's the last thing you feel like doing. If you are afraid of dropping pounds you could increase your calorie intake while you're increasing your activity level. I know you already eat 8 times a day - maybe add more avocado (gotta love avocado!!). Kim :-) Day 16 SCD dairy-free 3 yo ASD, 2 yo NT RE: Re: [pecanbread OT EXERCISE QUESTION was Like Cream of Wheat Low tone in children is usually a neurologically based issue. It is not the same as losing muscle mass when dieting or ill such as in an adult. Noah has always had low tone, which got better immediately after dietary change to GFCF and with supplementation with carnitine which was indicated on his OAT test. Did you end up getting the evaluation you were considering for Kiki? You may want to at least have the occupational therapy and physical therapy eval, so she could get these services since she has low tone. Exercise for kids should just be plenty of play outdoors... running, jumping, climbing. As for yourself, go ahead and get moving. Resistance training with weights, bands or babies would be helpful to build muscle. Make sure you get good instruction or proper form though.
