As much as possible during waking hours you want your son resting on the

prominent side of the back of his head, resting on the bulge. If he is leaning

on his left side then all he is doing is holding in the flat spot. You want to

provide pressure agains the bulge so that as his head is growing the bluge is

being held while the flattened area catches up. You also want to give him as

much tummy time as possible. And tummy time does not necessarily mean lop him

down on his tummy and leave it at that. There are a lot of things you can do

with him to spice up tummy time for a baby who doesn't like being on his tummy.

Please check the Cranial Tech website. They have a phenomenal online brochure

with tummy time tips for different ages.

During sleeping time, there are two philosophies on how to position the baby's

head. One theory says place the child to sleep on his side so that the flat

side is down towards the mattress. The thought process behind it is that

gravity will pull the growth of the head downward. I personally don't buy that

(I am no biology major but it seems to me that people grow taller and gravity

doesn't make us grow shirter). My fear would also be that during the night the

baby would roll his head right back onto the flat spot and continue to flatten

it. The other philosophy is to have the baby sleep on his side or tipped up a

little towards the side where the bulge is. Again, the mattress provides a

holding point for the head and the growth will come where the head is not being

held in place (mattress against head).

Whichever method you choose, I wish you the best of luck with it. Please look

in out File section and click on " repositioning Headquarters. " There is a lot

of information there, and you are welcome to call me out on the board or email

me directly if you have any questions (res103198 ). I repositioned

my daughter from the time she was 3.5 months old. We had great success with it.

You can see ser pictures in the photose section Under Before and

After/Repositioned/ S.

Good luck and let us know how it is going.

stretch the muscles. His forehead buldges on the tort side which is the right

side and his head buldges in the back on the same side (the right side).

However there is some flatness on the front right side too. We have been to the

neurologist and he said that his case is very minor and he does not think that

it warrents a helmet but is going to send us to a neuro surgeon just to get a

second opinion. In the meanwhile I want to work on repositioning and want to

make sure I am putting him on the correct side to help with his misshapen head.

I have been placing him on his left side but it almost seems that I should be

placing him on the right because of the buldge in the back of his head. I can

post a picture if that will help. I was able to find a pic in the photo album

titled Before and After Pictures/ Repositioned that best represents Logan's

however his forehead also buldges in the front on is his right side which is

also her right side. The picture is pic #35 titled Kadie week2. Any help or

advise would be greatly appreciated. I was looking for some posts reguarding the

matter but the database is so big so even some diection as to where or what to

search to get some helpful info would be great.

It might help to see a photo, because I'm a little confused as to how his

forehead and the back is bulging on the same side. My son had tort and his right

forehead was bulged and his back right was flat, so the back left bulged.

Typically, that's how it works, whatever side is bulging in the front, it's

opposite in back, not the same, which is what gives the head the parallelagram

look. My first instinct is to tell you to rest him on the left side, but I'm not

sure until I see a picture.

In our files section, there is some repo information if you haven't found it

yet:

Hope that helps to start with.

Your situation is very common for many of us here. This is heart of the whole

debate as to whether banding is needed or not. For some babies, the answer is

much more difficult. It really boils down to what you think is right for your

own child and you. My own son was borderline needing a helmet. We tried repo

from 2 months onwards and I believe we were quite aggressive with it. He didn't

get worse, but he didn't get better either. I had him learn to sit up by 5

months and he was never allowed on his back, except for sleeping, after 5 months

of age. He got his helmet at 7.5 months after I had finally decided things

weren't improving as quickly as I would have liked. Now, I wish I had banded

back at 5 months.

Our neurologist basically said that banding would give faster improvements for

our son. If we did nothing, eventually his headshape would improve at around 2

years of age... up to 5 years of age. If that is true, I didn't want to wait

that long to find out if that would happen or not.

The neurologist said that we could basically achieve the same results in a band

that we would get from his head naturally rounding out by age 2 - 5. I decided

to act now.

Oh... and by wearing the helmet, it was a huge sigh of relief for me. I could

actually sleep at night knowing that my son's head wasn't getting flatter by the

way he was sleeping. He has worn is for 1.5 months so far and as everyone else

seems to say on here, the time flies and the time in the helmet is pretty short.

All the best in making a decision!
