Guest guest
Hey guys I found this article on fish oil and I thought I would relay it to everyone especially since Dr. Rutledge just added it to pre-ops. Benefits of Fish Oils Proven Again A report on findings appearing in the August issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition states that fish oils do, indeed, lower triglycerides, which are fats that can lead to cardiovascular disease. The new study was conducted by Canadian researchers. Triglycerides make up one of two fats from food, the other being cholesterol, that circulate in the bloodstream. The news was even better for women, the researchers say, is that fish oil has this effect whether or not a woman is taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT). And that's critical because HRT has been shown to raise triglyceride levels, not giving post-menopausal women -- those most at risk for strokes and heart attacks -- the protection that was once thought, they say. The ingredients in fish oil -- called omega-3 fatty acids -- that lower the troublesome triglycerides can be gotten naturally or through supplements. Taking omega-3 supplements " might be good co-therapy for women taking hormone replacement therapy, " says lead researcher Ken D. Stark, a doctoral candidate at the University of Guelph, in Canada. The 35 women in the study, half of whom were on HRT, each were given a daily dose of fish oil concentrate containing 4 grams of omega-3 fatty acids, considered an exceptionally high amount.
