Molly,

I think Jody replied to you a few days ago when you first posted about this....

and asked you why you cut his diet back to only veggies, fruit and meat. We

were kind of waiting for an answer on that, I think.

In the back of my mind, I'm wondering if he is getting enough food... enough

calories and nutrients?

OT: Kid is obsessed with food

Anyone else had this experience? My son (nearly 4) is absolutely

obsessed with food. He has been on strict SCD since 8/05, but in early

May of this year he went back to real basics and eats only vegetables,

fruit, and meat. He is doing well digestively, but he is crazed about

food. He is CONSTANTLY commenting on food, looking at food, wanting to

smell foods in the store, etc., etc. I really don't know what to do

about this. I am considering getting connected with a counselour, but

wanted to get some input from others on the list first.

Molly,

Why don't you tell us what foods he's doing well on and perhaps some

of us can offer some creative ideas on what you could make out of what

he is currently eating to " Spice up " his menu and perhaps get his mind

off of other food.

The other issue is to be certain that he is getting enough calories.

Being constantly hungry would make anyone thing about food all the time.

Oops. I didn't see my first posting, so I reposted. Anyway, my little

guy is eating only fruits, vegetables, and meats because after being on

the diet for 8 months he still was not having cosistent solid poops and

was incredibly hyperactive. I posted for suggestions and it was

recommended that I serve more protein and vegetables, pull the honey,

and avoid lots of baked goods. I pulled nut products, goat yogurt and

honey. Fed lots of vegetables, meats, eggs, and fruits and he has had

solid poops ever since and is considerably less hyper. I recently

tried to add cashew butter back in and his poops quickly went mushy

again. A sample menu of his would be:

Breakfast

1 to 2 eggs

steamed carrots and/or broccoli (6 to 8 baby carrots and /or 3 or 4

pieces of broccoli

1/2 to 1 avacado

1 steamed apple or pear

1/2 brown banana

Lunch/Dinner

meat (chicken, pork, or beef)

1 sausage, 1 burger, or 2 chicken thighs at each meal

vegetables (steamed broccoli, green beans, carrots, or cauliflower)

good size serving of at least one, usually two of above veggies

sqaush pie (squash, egg, and homemade applesauce)

1 -2 slices of pie

Snacks

steamed fruit or veggies

Drinks

Water

I intend to add nut products, yogurt and honey back into his diet, but

he just doesn't seem ready yet. He does eat lots at each meal and has

regular snacks. I am fairly certain he is getting the right amount of

calories as he is growing well. Since starting the diet nearly one

year ago he has gained 6.5 pounds and certainly appears much

healthier. I really believe his obsession is an emotional thing.

Thanks for your insight.

I had wondered about this as well. My son is constantly talking about

food, wondering what's the next meal (even while he's eating the current

one), always wants to be sure there is food available in the van when we

leave, etc. I just assumed it was one of his OCD things.

I do not know if my kids are getting enough calories/nutrients either,

but they seem to be eating plenty. We are severely restricted as well

due to many food allergies, so I think it's just normal for them to worry

about food when they have so many restrictions. However, that is my

unprofessional opinion. I'd love to hear some other replies!

Molly, I would never have suggested pulling fruit and honey for this

long infact I would have only said to minimize it at the beginning and

that also would have been if you have yeast concerns.Ideally, we want a

balanced diet and varied menu. No one should go overboard with baked

goods. Please see top if page 64 edition ten of BTVC.

Do start with the addition of the missing foods, gradually of course.

We've been scd for 2 years and 2 of the 3 kids are like this. Wondering what

will be for breakfast the next day , what snacks will they have that day. It's

not every day but mostly every day. I have noticed that when they can play with

friends, food thoughts go out the window so I didn't feel like it was something

to worry about for me. Pearl

I act the same way. My friends have noted I am often discussing food,

but they are also interested in the recipes. Food has been too big a

deal since I was a small child (and got to be an obese one). Now, it's

the quality of SCD food that makes it so appealing and has me looking

forward to grocery shopping and making menu decisions and of course

relishing the start of the next meal!

When an interesting activity beckons, all thoughts of food fly away. I

have too often used food as a remedy for boredom.
